Check engine light

Just installed new p1000 on 04 2500 Cummins as per instructions. Check engine light on first start... good connections. Haven't turned it up yet as figure on doing mileage test first week to see if it will beat my usual 20.5 mpg commute mileage, then play with it... how do I check the codes? I don't want to blow this engine. 328102 miles, new injectors, fas fuel pump, south bend clutch, cold air intake and 4" exhaust. Never had a check engine light before. Seems to be a common problem, please help. Truck had been chipped previously and removed with no problems prior to me buying it, not sure what brand...
