Brake Control Module Recall and existing tune

Post by Fastman »

Hi guys, first post on this forum. I have a 2017 Silverado 1500 that's involved in the recall GM just announced that deals with the weak vacuum assist on 2014-2018 Silverado and Sierra 1500’s.

What happened was I took my truck in for an oil change, the dealer notified me that there was a recall in regards to the braking system and the electronic brake control module needed to be reprogrammed. I was at the time running the 87 canned tune with the firm transmission tune. I forgot to flash it back to stock before I let them have at it. When the technician that worked on my truck drove it back around to me after performing the recall, he didn't seem like he knew it had been tuned and he said the recall was performed successfully.

So I have a two part question.

One:
Would his scan tool not have noticed the tune as it was dealing with the EBCM and not the ECM or TCM? Or is he just not telling me that he knew my truck was tuned? I still have 80,000km of powertrain left and would like to know if I have that safety net or not.

Two: After I got my truck back, I reflashed it to stock and then rewrote the tune, mostly just to see what would happen. No errors or problems there but it did get me thinking. When I reflash a tune, I've always gotten a bunch of warning lights in the gauge cluster while the reflash commences, one of those warning lights is the ABS warning light. Can anyone here confirm if the software on the electronic brake control module is ever touched by these tuners? Or is the ABS warning light simply the nature of the beast when flashing a tune? I would like to confirm whether or not I may have overwritten the recall on the EBCM.

Thanks, I look forward to hearing from someone soon!

They would have updated the EBCM - electronic brake control module - for that... so that would not have affected the ECM or TCM modules...

The lights on the dash are normal during a tune flash/install... nothing to worry about there..

and if you were able to restore stock and then reinstall the tunes, then you are fine and good to go... they did not do anything to the ECM or TCM modules... if they did, you would have gotten errors on the programmer screen when you tried to restore stock tune... so you're fine and good to go bud.

the programmer can not access the EBCM at all, so no, it did not overwrite the GM update to the braking system/EBCM update...

Thanks for the info Monte! FYI When I get some headers on my truck I'll be contacting you for a custom tune :D
