John C has resolved the dat viewer issues with Vista and also resolved the conectivity issues with DSDL for me.

I bet there will be a updated dat viewer soon

Good news, though - I just finished some major modifications to the libraries that form the communications layer for both DSDL and the DataViewer. I have some more testing to do, but it looks like this will solve any USB to Serial problems these apps were ...

Ok, this is very good to know.

Does your Vista laptop have any serial ports on it? Or were you planning on using a USB-to-Serial cable? If the latter, have you purchased it yet? what model cabel? And have you installed the drivers for it yet?
