2008 Durango stalls in gear P0171

Post by doc440 »

Hooked up my I2 to try the 87 performance tune, vehicle starts and runs. When I shift into drive or reverse the engine idle goes way down, bounces a few times and stalls out. Does the same thing with the MPG tune. When I install the the stock calibration the vehicle runs just fine. Also get a P0171, lean condition code with the canned tunes. This a 4.7 non-flex fuel. I did some data logging and the canned tunes on the I2 might be flex fuel tunes. I can also attach the logs if you need them.

Edit: I can't post the backup or last tune written files. Keep getting an upload error.

Any mods on the vehicle?
Can you please load one of the tunes that causes an issue then post the backup and last tune written files here so we can take a look at them?
You can go back to stock after posting the files if needed.

Vehicle is completely stock. I tried to attach the backup and last tune written files again and keep getting an upload error. The forum won’t allow the attachments.

Looks like file upload is working. Thanks Mikel.

Connected the I2 to the computer and ran the updater. Device updated and I tried running the 87 tune again. Nothing changed, engine still stalls in gear. Installed stock calibration and all is good. Device is still married to the VIN, just running the stock tune if that matters.

Spoke with tech support a few weeks ago and they targeted my device for an update. Ran the update and nothing has changed. Here are logs of the stock calibration and the 87 tune.
11287_03.log
11287_04.log
And here is the info.xml file
info.xml
I unmarried the tool and tried again. Still nothing. I did notice high fuel trims over 20% with the 87 and MPG tunes. Fuel trim less than 6% with the stock tune.

Tried loading the 91 tune and the screen went black and the I2 rebooted and came up in recovery mode. It restored everything back to stock and is no longer married to the VIN. I'm almost ready to give up on the idea of tuning this vehicle.

I was looking at the logs and it looks like the throttle is closing when I shift into gear. Why does it close the throttle when shifted to drive or reverse?

thats a standard torque reduction move. eliminates harsh gear engagements, etc.

I should clarify: With the 87 tune installed, when shifted into gear it looks like it is closing the throttle more and more until the engine stalls. If you look in the log you can see the engine RPM going up and down until it just stalls out.

So, why don't any of the canned tunes work? If the vehicle is no longer supported, just say so.

With the stock tune it looks like it opens the throttle slightly (1%) when the transmission is shifted into gear, I’m guessing this is to compensate for increased load from the torque converter and to keep the engine from stalling. So why don’t any of the canned tunes work? This is my work vehicle and I sometimes drive 3000 miles per month. Just looking to get a little better mpg and maybe pick up some low end torque.
