2012 F150 Ecoboost Miss or RPM surge

Post by mrlullabye »

I'm not sure exactly whats happening, but all stock f150 3.5 EB I loaded the tow tune from an intune i3 and noticed under hard acceleration a funny sensation. I don't know if it is a misfire per say but it sort of feels like it. Around 4k rpms and above its like the rpms surge 50-100 rpms rapidly. So the RPMs keep climbing but it does sort of feel like what an rpm limiter would do though. I changed the plugs to the newer Motorcraft 534 plugs and gapped them at .030 and it seems to have gotten better but it might just be me. I am thinking about changing the coils as it has 5 factory fomoco coils and 1 no name. I just bought the truck about 2 months ago so maintenance history is unknown, but nothing seems to have been grossly neglected.

Video may be attached (I tried at least) of before changing the sparkplugs watch the tach. I have tried all of the tunes on the tuner and they all seem to have a similar surge.

Also I noticed some threads where folks had provided datalogging and gotten custom tunes. What would I need to do for that personal tune?

the no name coil is odd for sure. No misfire codes present?
I might close the gap a bit too, but .030 should be ok....

I'm starting to think my BOVs might be weak. I am hearing a sort of mooing sound that I can feel the vibration when I let off the gas and am just costing. maybe fluttering down there. Trying to find some way to test this theory.

For what it is worth turning the WOT fuel setting to +4% in the 4k rpm and up range seems to have fixed it. I'm pretty impressed with it running 23 psi of boost more or less stock + tune. The BOVs scream though I am thinking about replacing them with the maximizers but really don't want them to be obnoxious.
