firm shift hesitation - 2nd to 3rd gears only

Post by mikel_too »

'07 Mustang GT Auto, predator U7145

Got a custom tune installed for 91 octane BBK CAI w/firm shift option. I thought it was good but recently noticed hesitation when tranny shifts from 2-3. All other gear changes feel good. At slow and gentile accel, it just shifts a little lazy (from 2-3) but hardly noticeable.

At heavy throttle, the hesitation is major. Anyone else experience this anomaly with firm shifting option?

Could it be a problem with the tranny that is just now more noticeable with firm shifting? I always thought the stock tune shifted lazily anyway to begin with (hence the desire to firm shift)...

I haven't put the original backup back on the car yet...

Well problem not COMPLETELY gone. Still a slight hesitation from 2nd to 3rd gear. Seems like it shifts too soon and not as firm as the other gears at 50+% throttle. WOT is perfect (all gears). Smooth slow acceleration (regular grandma driving) also feels fine in all gears.

But getting on it NOT 100% yields a hesitant somewhat lazy shift (only from 2nd to 3rd). Any suggestions anyone? Any settings like upshift MPH that might help it shift later and possibly quicker under this condition?

My laptop is down................again. Hope to have a new one by tomorrow. Luckily I backed everything up before it crashed. As soon as I get it up and going I will check it Mike.

Thanks Mike!

When I get the time, I plan to play around with the canned Diablosport firm shift tune again to try to see if it is my transmission, the firm shift concept or the custom tune that is to blame. Remember the problem was much worse before your last tune, and it got better with your attempt to fix it which leads me to believe some more slight adjustments may be able to clean it up completely...

Is problem resolved? What was solution here? I have a Saleen Supercharged 06 Mustang, had same shift hesitation between 2-3 shift, it gets worse the more I put my foot into it. It seems related to Intake temp. Im typically in the 140+ degree range or higher when it occurs, it does not do it when car is cold. JDM and Techo have both taken stabs at the problem. JDM with an SCT tuner, no luck. Techo with the Predator and had it on their dyno for 2 days at could not solve it.

Car is under dealer warranty but dealer is giving up.

Thanks

Well my conditions are a little different. But no not resolved. I am beginning to think it can't be resolved. Mine always does tihis hesitation but only when 50-75% or so throttle. Temperature makes no difference. I tried the Diablo Firm Shift tune and it hesitates from 2-3 also "pretty much" in the same fashion. I think it may be the transmission. I don't know if it is bad enough to worry about. It doesn't feel exactly the same and it may be to a lesser degree with the Diablosport tune vs. the custom firm shift tune. Still testing it out...

I'm going to leave the DS tune on a little longer and try to see which is better for the shifting. Right now it is kind of hard to tell. I already know which tune is better for my intake.

Problem not completely solved. DS tech: Please remove "solved" in status...

Reading several other forums, this is a common problem with this transmission. Most of the posts in other forums claimed this could be and in some cases was solved with a custom tune.... (still researching).

DS canned Firm Shift tune still has some level of hesitation from 2nd to 3rd. Going to try DS 91 octune Perf. tune without firm shift to see what it does...

Hey Mike at tuning_ss and DS techs:

Check out this link:
http://www.diablosport.com/index.php?na ... hesitation

Sound familiar? Sounds a lot like my problem, only with him it was all gear transitions (but same heavy partial throttle condition) ...

What was done to fix it?

OK, more results. With the DS 91 Perf tune (no firm shift), there isn't much difference (if any) from 2-3 compared to the other transitions. If I was to be REAL picky I would say it is a little different (possibly a SLIGHT hesitation), but the others shift slowly like stock so it really isn't noticeable. It seems like there might be a quirk in my tranny (or the way the computer controls) the shifting from 2-3 that isn't quite right and the firm shift option really amplifies it.

I can feel it with both my custom firm tune and the DiabloSport canned firm shift. I wish there was a way to keep the firm shift and fix the funky transition from 2-3. I do like the firm shift especially at WOT, but I'm not goin' racin' so I guess I can be happy with the performance tune without the firm shift. It is still WAY BETTER than the stock set up.

Still willing to entertain suggestions and help on this...

No use taking it to dealer with stock tune reinstalled, I doubt that I could prove anything is wrong with the shifting, as (come to think of it) I don't remember feeling anything wrong myself until I went to firm shifting.
