Still poor mileage
I have installed the 9t11a crom on my '08 F-450. The lag has been reduced and the power gains are great! However I have seen no fuel mileage gains, still only getting about 9.5 avg. I have run 3 tanks thru it in the 50 hp economy setting. I tow a enclosed trailer about half the time weighing approx. 6500 lbs. What can I do to increase the fuel mileage.
Thanks,
Matt

RE: Still poor mileage
I am having the same problem 08 f-250 getting 9.2 to 10 mpg, towing nothing
RE: Still poor mileage
in other posts guys getting poor mileage diagnosed the issue of having clogged EGR valve. The tests the dealer ran came up with nothing wrong but removal showed otherwise. You may want to look into that. Glogged fuel filter will also cause issues as well.
Some users on this forum are getting 16-18mpg in the 6.4L trucks.

RE: Still poor mileage
Blocking the EGR looks easy just a couple of plates. Just wondering about the tune for that?
RE: Still poor mileage
yeah but people that fail to clean or diagnose a bad EGR valve see mileage gains by blocking it off and think that the EGR is a mileage killer when in reality it is usually a repair problem.
RE: Still poor mileage
I know i have been having some trouble with my truck as of late too, got some really good mileage for a few trips, when i was unloaded. I load my quads up and i'm back down to 12(or so)mpg, where unloaded i was at 17-20mpg. My boost always runs high too. But the truck goes in on tuesday for a new egr valve i'll let you all know if it helps.

Hey joestroo, and Don C.,
joestroo, Did the DPF-r kit void your factory warranty? Everyone that claims to be getting 17 to 20 mpg has one, I haven't seen anyone on these forums getting that kind of mileage on completely stock truck.
Don C., My truck only has 17,000 mi. on it. Could the EGR be clogged that soon? I also find it hard to beleive that the EGR would increase my mileage form 9.5 to 17.

MAtSTER,
The kit will void your warranty, it is fairly easy to put on and off thou. My truck is over warranty already thou, is a work truck, lots of km's on it in 2 years. If you do run with one and you have warranty problems, you could put it back to stock and take it in. Look onto it well before you do put the dpf-r kit in thou.
I have heard of guys having gone threw 2 or 3 egr valves in that amount of miles. Does you boost seem to run high going down the highway?? Like over 10 or so psi??

It could be clogged that soon, sometimes it happens. Some trucks will get away without a problem, others have them immediately. I would say going from 9 to 17 is a stretch but from 9 to say 13-14 could be reasonably achievable. These trucks are tough to get mileage out of bc of the dpf. Especially when you start towing with them. Ford runs these new calibrations pretty aggressive as is as far as timing goes, so there isnt much room to work with.

I believe hoondog on these forums is getting 16+mpg with NO DPF-R. So it is possible.
Boost issues are one possible symptom of a bad EGR. They can go out frequently depending on the use. I properly working EGR will have a significant affect on your mileage. To me, going from 9mpg to 14 mpg is a 50% improvement. Other users have reported mpg gains when the EGR was replaced or cleaned even after the supposed "techs" at the dealer found nothing wrong with the tests.

RE: Still poor mileage
After reading the above comments, I will tell you what I have noticed. I have changed my egr valve 3 times so far, The truck has about 60,000 mile on it. The thing that usaully tips me off to the egr valve trouble, is my boost. If your pushing more the 10-15psi
of boost, chances are egr valve is not working or plugged up. the motor on egr valve may still be working, but doesnt mean its not all sooted up. These trucks will not through a cel light, as long as motor voltage is in perameter . As far as milage goes, I have 6.4
f-350 5" exhaust out back, with Banks Cold Air system. The rest of the truck is stock ,except for pred. I have seen milage between 17-19, running light, 12-14 runnning with 10,000.00. I would have to think if your getting 8-9 mpg , something else must be causing it. even fooling around with the extreme tunes and customs , never saw that low of milage..Just what I have noticed.

Thanks again for the info. I'll check the EGR. I would be thrilled w/ 13 or 14 mpg.
