U7165 Won't Save Original Backup

Post by BerrelAuto »

I sold a U7165 to a customer of mine with an 04 Excursion. Upon trying to install a performance tune the tuner cannot save the original backup file. It gets stuck at the "Turn Ignition On" screen. The tuner has been updated to R17. The Cal ID is VXBC9NZ. Also when I try to read the VIN it reads HEX. What could be the problem?

Does the predator see the key on when the key is asked to be cycled?
Also has this vehicle ever had another programmer installed on it before?

It doesn't recognize the ignition on. The owner bought it new and it has 12000 miles on it. He had not installed any other programmer or tuner on the truck.

Sounds like there may be a chip on the truck.

How can I tell this if the customer is positive that he didn't install anything and he claims he bought the truck new?

Can you confirm this on another truck for us. I have seen in the past some dealers switch some of the OBDII wires on the OBDII port on the truck on purpose to prevent people from tuning their trucks. Basically if you try this on another truck this will do a little process of elimination for us and it will tell us that the predator is not seeing ignition turn on (ie Faulty predator) but if it does see ignition then its the vehicle which is tampered with the last time it was in the dealership.

My intentions were to try the Predator on another truck, I just have to find another truck to try it on as we don't work on alot of Powerstrokes. I will let you know how i make out and thanks for the response.

Update: I wasn't able to find another 6.0L Powerstroke to try this tuner on but I was able to borrow another brand of tuner and that one saved the backup file no problem. What should my next step be? My customer is getting alittle irritated now.

Ok so we have narrowed it down to being the predator that is the issue. I would return it and get it swapped out with another unit. Once this is done you should have no issues.
