RE: White puff at 100 hp

Sounds like the EGR Cooler, Oil Cooler and Head Gaskets. Had the identical problem and had to bring it in to Ford for a week's worth of labour and parts.

Had some recent work done on an '03 crew cab. Tech updated it to VXAP2N2.
Had to load the 9r10 to recognize. The 100hp makes it feel like it's missing. Sometimes when it fires up a puff of white comes out and idles erraticly. If you give it throttle it just "loads up" and no revs.

60 hp feels alright but not as much power as previous tune.

Any insight....is it an injector problem?

Cheers,
B
I am having the same issues with this crom, strange thing tho as when I first installed it was working fine then about a week or so later is when the problems started white smoke on cold start and rough idle on 100 hp tune.

The other tunes seem to work fine and stock tune fine also.

Ford dealership says there are no problems with the truck and no error codes.

I called customer support and was told that they were working on a new crom as apparently there are many with same issues.

Will be glad to get this working correctly again soon........
Is there going to be the power back in the 100hp tune like it used to be?
Any word on the new crom file?

u7165 9r10 power loss

Post by shel82 »

I am having problems with update 9r10 on u7165 no white smoke or rough idle and shifting has seem to have fixed itself but I have notice considerable power loss and decrease in mileage, in every tune. Is there a fix for this?

the new tunes will have some slight updates...car to share what you mean by power loss....off the line, general all around power? Mileage will be tweaked as well in the next revision

I am off the line quicker due to the quick shifting, but yes all around power is alot less in the 100hp tune. My truck used to haul ass on 100hp tune and just belch black smoke off the line and even at highway speed if I puched it. Now it smokes a little bit from low speeds and not at all from high speeds I could feel the power loss as soon as I updated. My tow tune feels stock compared to before. My truck wouldn't even down shift up a hill at 75 mph with my trailer on and now it downshifts on flat ground. Mileage went down from 19-20 mpg to 15-16 mpg. Before on the 100hp tune I barely had to touch the gas and my truck was really moving now I have to floor it to get it to go anywhere.

hmm with all these problems Im not really sure if I want to install the new crom on my truck...I wish FORD would'nt use a reflash as a fix for injector control mods and such it seems that all the reflashes are a bigger pain then the ones befor my truck runs great stock even though I have less power and I am afraid of disturbing the fine details of my programing, every time I set my truck to stock it runs like crap eventhough the tune was good what should a guy do??

the vxcf7 is a good upgrade, less headaches with the trucks for sure. I am currently playing with the 6.0 tunes, fact of the matter is the trucks picked up 100 ft lbs over the older crom tunes on the 100hp tunes. I have been tweaking a few things and noticed that the older trucks used less aggressive back pressure which is why the trucks i think feel so sluggish. In the new tunes i have mileage, power, and take off should all be improved.

Thanks Don,

do you think I should run the new Crom or wait for the new fixes your working on, when you first did the new tunes back in June My truck ran amazingly nice with the custom tune you did for me. I hope I can have the smooth power and such again

I just found this thread and I wanted to let you know that I have a similar issue. On 100 HP (only) the truck (cold) cranks longer to start and seems to load up with fuel (runs rough with no/poor thottle response) for about 10 seconds. Lots of white smoke (definitely unburned fuel), then it seems to clean out and runs great. Several times it required a restart too. I switched back to the 60 HP and it's perfect. Somehow it seems to be loading up with fuel before it starts - if thats possible? 2003 6.0 U7165 9R10

yup its because of a lack of injector timing, easy fix. Ford acutally just came out vxcf9..i made the tune for it and its ready to rock. This gives me more of reason to release so it works out pretty well
