1998 Mustang GT - Already has a preformance Tune loaded

Post by rlnewman »

part # 259041
I have 1998 Mustang GT that already has a preformance tune loaded by the people that owned the car before me. I don't have the programmer for it.
The U7146 told me the performacne tune was loaded and stopped before it tried to do the back up - that's a good thing.
Is this normally, I didn't see anywhere in the literature that the programmer would recognize a non-factory tune?
Can I have a dealer load the factory tune and then use the U7146 to load the new tune?
Or is there something else I will need to do?

Yes, get it reflashed at the dealership and you'll be good to go.

The programmer told me that I already had a performance Tune loaded and then ended my session, that was good.
Is this a normal message?
Is the programmer checking the ECM for the tune first before the back up?
Does the programmer recognize a chip that might be ahead of the ECM?

Just wondering, the literature says do not load over a non-factory tune.
I'm going to Ford this week to have factory tune loaded.
Thanks for the info.

Its just telling you that there is already a tune on the ecm and that it cannot flash over it. Get it reflashed at the dealership and then you should be able to use the tool normally.
No, i don't work here.

Went to Ford, they checked and said the ECM is programmed for a Lincoln Navigator - a Surprise. Car runs fine.
They can not reflash the ECM with the 98 mustang tune, can not get the build order from Ford to download the tune.

Any ideas of where to go from here?

1.) Can another (later) year tune be loaded into my ECM - 1999 - 2004?
If I can find someone to do it. Don't think Ford dealer will do it.
Then use the Preditor I have already.
2.) Or do I have to purchase a remanufactured ECM with factory
tune before I can use the Peditor?
3.) Can I force the Preditor to go ahead and back up the current tune
and overwrite the current tune in the ECM with the new tune?
4.) Does the ECM have to be one for the mustang?

Many questions few answers so far.
Please Help............
Thanks

There is NO way they cant get a file to flash to that car. Thats BS.

Sounds like there may be a chip on the PCM....there is no way it was flashed as a Navigator, it would not have been running.

Sounds like you should find a new ford dealer, these guys are lost.

Went to another Ford dealer, one that is more performance minded, Anderson Ford in Clinton Illinois (many High Performance Mustangs in Stock, with a Dyno in house).
Anyway they said the 98 had a Navigator tune, but they flashed the stock tune into the PCM and I used the Preditor and set up the 93 Octane tune in the Car. Running fine, tune went in without any problems.
Thanks for the help......... Not all Ford dealerships are equal !!!!!

Yup, had to take mine to Ford to have the PCM flashed for $90 and then everything worked well.
