06 Ram throwing CEL.. Any Ideas?

Post by jetman150 »

Hey guys, got an 06 ram, LT headers, CAI, catback, etc. using custom 93 tune, but dont suspect its much different because I get the same check engine light with either the custom, or the 93 diablo tune..

I keep getting 02 sensor slow response, and Fuel bank too lean messages..
Most of the time this happens after about 15-20 minutes on the highway at cruise speeds.. 70-75mph.. It is inconsistent as well, somedays it throws the code, some days it dont..

Anyone have any experience with this? Or know whats going on and how to fix it? I suspect that I need to replace an 02 sensor.. but im not sure if there is a bigger underlying problem.. pointers appreciated.

who did the custom tune for you, was it a cmr dealer? Or do you mean you did a few modify params with the predator? Long tubes will usually give you the slow response because of their distance from the engine compared to the stock manifolds.

A CMR did the tune via email..
After a few times of the CEL coming on, I played iwth the parameters a bit, but nothing with fuel or spark..
turned MDS off, and put in the stock tire size..

Here we go, since loading this tune, I have:
-Turned MDS off (Was a little rough, if smoothing can be done I would appreciate it! )
- confirmed tire size to 275-60-r20
dont know if any of this matters too much or not..

Drove 20 miles one way tonight, no cel. drove back, 10 miles in cel popped on.
The tune was done by Mike Wilson, and I have to say the truck has great power and driveability. I can skip the tires in second gear, and if I dont watch the pedal through first it will spin em after 3K rpms..

Also, I thought I remembered a place where the rear gears could be set.. but Couldnt see the option after an update and this custome tune.. I have the 3.92 rears.. dont know if that makes a difference with the tune..???

Why yes, i think i may. I've encountered and conquered the exact same scenario. This MAY be happening to you .
See if you can log your "Exhaust Temp Model" pid on the tool. I believe you will see that pid maybe around 1800* F or so, one of your cats are starting to fail, thus creating and inconsistency between the cat that is failing, and the cat that is not, so your getting a "slow response code" cause one is slower. The failing cat is creating a slight blockage, now, but will deteriorate from this point forward. When it goes, it'll feel like there's rocks in the cats banging around, and the truck will run very strange. You can either replace the one and wait for the other to go, or gut them, or splice in a straight pipe i would imagine,

Last time I got a custom TCM tune, I was using the r02 firmware.
I see now the latest firmware has many updates since mine. Are their any update for firmer shifts, or improvements in general that i can gain, or is a custom tcm then the same as one now?
Im not exactly sure which one is needed. I sent 3.
or should i just update the firmware to the latest, then use my custom tunes?
thanks for looking

I have the hi-flow cats on the truck from dynatech, but I dont think they are failing.. Ive logged my egt, and I think it has gotten as high as 1500, but usually stays around 1200-1300....

I was able to use the custom tune that I have after updating, But a diablo guy will have to confirm if it will cause issues or not..

pcm tune looks great i see nothing wrong with it so i would def suspect the 02s just going out on ya, especially since you are also reading lean on a bank, 02's will tend to do that when their lives are over. Make sure when you pick up new ones that you get a mopar one, or another quality name brand, no skimping out on those ones. I would update to the newest firmware and try your custom stuff again. If you need more help post up.

Thanks! I will try that..
truck has 44K miles on it, so it seems early for o2 sensors to go out, but they might have fried out with the LT's..

I see tons of cases where O2 harnesses get fried on the headers after a LT install....
