Somebody Please Help.

Post by RichC »

I need to make a case when I go to the dealer about the problems I'm having with my SRT8. I've had it with this... This is the stock tune that I just re-installed and the car Knocks like crazy (even with race gas). It looks like the AFR's are all over the place? I don't know...

The car has been doing this since I bought it new. I can’t find a CMR tuner that can mess with it for long without costing me a bunch of money...

I'm at a loss here.

Kinda looks like what my truck was doing. Wonder if you have the same corrosion in the harness that I did?

I have to go back and look at your posts... I have no Idea what it is at this point. The dealer says the car is running perfect and one of the mechanics actually told me that I could wait until it blows up to figure it out.

This is silly. This car is close to brand new and its inches away from destruction.

RichC,,you're over reacting. Nothing in your log tells me your engine is "inches away from destruction." Just because the PCM is pulling a few degrees of timing doesn't mean that detonation is going to ruine your engine. Sometimes the PCM gets a little over sensitive and pulls some timing "just in case."

Diablo actually "desensitzes" the knock sensors a bit to prevent the PCM from pulling timing excessively.

The fact that the Knock retard is present even with "race gas", tells me to be a little suspicious that true detonation is occuring.

The amount of KR in your logs looks well within factory tolerances. The PCM allows up to about 14 degrees of timing to be pulled. You're only at 7. This tells you that the PCM thionks its fixed your detonation(if it ever really existed) and doesn't think pulling more timing is needed.

You want to see an F'ed up Log with a crap ton of Knock, look at this one:

If your really frighten about it DO SOMETING!! You have the power in your hands RIGHT NOW! No CMR needed. Simply complaining to others obviously isn't getting you anywhere. Take your trusty Predator and REMOVE 3 degrees of WOT timing from ALL RPM ranges. I'd use one of the DIablo tunes though with the less sensitive Knock sensor settings.

I'm not even close to over reacting... The car has a very audible ping at part throttle and I've seen the KR shoot up to 10*. There should be no reason for me to pull timing on a stock tune. There are two SRT8's in my area which I have data logged stock with 3-4* max KR.

I have no doubt that there is something wrong here... As far as you're comment about me complaining, I'm just asking for help, that's all.

I have had custom tunes which ran at 9.5:1 at WOT to get rid of the KR.

One more thing... Any Diablo canned tune that I install makes the car virtually undrividable. The detonation when I roll into the throttle is so bad that it sounds like pennies are banging around inside the engine. I think that's a clear indication of some sort of issue here.

No codes, and I added fuel only once to test the issue and it helped a little. I get almost 0 KR when the intake temps are below 60 deg. As soon as it gets warm outside, I'll start to hear the pinging and get all the KR. I'm just getting concerned with the audible ping. It's a nasty sound.

I meant no offense. but simply continiuing to drive around with what you've described as "inches away from destuction" is lunacy when you have the power to at least make your car safe to drive even though you might not be able to cure it.

Stock engines Knock,,its just a fact. Your log of your stock tune does not look out of the ordinary. With that said,,maybe if I actually heard your's I'd understand your point of view.

If the niose you're hearing is actually audible knock and its is as bad as you say it is, use the tools and advice already given to you.

Reduce the WOT TIMING advance at least 3 degrees if not 5,,until you get this figured out.

Thank You for the advise. I will reduce the WOT timing for now, but since its getting warmer I'm going to have to drive the car around town in Auto Stick so the engine doesn't load as bad. That's when the ping is the worst, when the transmission doesn't downshift and I roll into the gas.

Thanks Mike. I've done that on the stock tune and it helped a little. I had to add quite a bit if I recall for it to help.

I think I remember seeing your issue in a past thread. Did you ever get a catch can installed and check to see what was inside of the manifold?
