2009 Ram Hemi trans shudder?

Post by dodgeboy »

I occasionally notice my trans shudder under WOT, usually at around 30-40mph. It seems to happen when it can't decide if it wants to downshift or not. It will shudder rather significantly 5-10 times and then either stop, or downshift (which stops the shuddering). I'm running one of the smoothed MDS tunes, but I believe it may have happened on the normal predator tune as well. This did not happen before I tuned the truck.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

here too... running rev o7 ... mds is still rough but much better... not running a mds smooth tune... 2 shift points set at 6k @ wot... have stuter problem also... must be a gap in program @ certain rpm that makes no descision...

I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. Hopefully that means it can be addressed.

I have the same problem, it's no gear hunting... with a StarScan in logging mode it show that the third gear is selected. It's the passing gear (third gear) that slips. It's very very bad for the overdrive/passing gear clutch plates. The shutter that you are feeling are the clutch plates that can't hold the gear causing the transmission to slip. It will burn/wear out eventually....

I know that this gear is the weakest part of our transmission. I am not sure if it's a diablo tune problem(transmission line pressure to low) or just the extra power generated at wot with the aggressive throttle response. I have the shutter daily when jumping from slow driving (40-60mph) to WOT, most times the gear does hold sometimes it doesn't.

Can only think about 4 options to fix it.
1. A patch causing the third gear to always operate at max line pressure to see if this helps...
2. A patch disabling the complete third gear when the throttle is at WOT.
3. Soften the Torque Management a bit when this gear is selected (an extra delay so the transmission has more time to engage the gear).
4. Let the customer go for a decent transmission rebuild when driving a lot at WOT

I am using the 87 oct tune with 5% full added.
using predator u7137 version v.9r06
my CALLID is: 68059438AB

Mikel, with the factory tune loaded there is a long delay when the transmission shifts in second prime during WOT. Only after the gear is changed full throttle is slowly applied. It's like the Dodge engineers knew that the third gear would have troubles handling the power that the new Hemi generates.

I have the same problem. If Im driving about 40-50 mph and drop the hammer, it downshifts but shudders bad like it is slipping. It doesnt stop till i get off the gas. Not happy about this at all. Is this a tuning issue? If so, when will it get fixed?

Yes, it does the same thing in 3rd gear with the factory tune and I am using the latest CROM.

I am using 9r06, will give 9r07 a test next week. Are there any changes between 9r06 and 9r07 that could help?
Like sbarbs there is no slipping/shudder when running with the stock tune on my truck.

Interesting, when running the 87oct tune with MDS disabled no slipping or shuddering. At least I can't reproduce it.
