Any suggestions for 2001 Silverado 5.3 Reg Cab 4x4 timing?

Post by JL8Jeff »

I installed the Predator tune with the U7198x rev 9R15 on my 2001 Silverado 5.3 4x4. I'm not looking for maximum power but rather better driveability and gas mileage. I've firmed up the shifts, line pressure, turned off torque management, added timing, adjusted fuel to be consistantly in the -1.5 to 0 range. I think have the timing set at 6, 5, 5 and I run 93 octane and haven't had any knock that I've noticed. Can I add more timing to help mpg? I went from 14.5 mpg to 15.25 but was hoping for more. I do mostly around town with very little highway. The truck has a ported TB, CAI, 160 t-stat and I cut back the EGR tube to remove that restriction. Tires are 295/75/16 and I adjusted that with the Predator as well. The LTFT's were around 6 to 7 so I adjusted with -7 and seem to be in the right range with the fuel. I haven't logged it yet because I was still doing some small mods and tuneup(new plugs) and haven't had a chance to get on the highway. I appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

I don't think I've actually hit WOT with the truck. I'm looking for the best combination for mpg with normal driving so if I have too much timing and it's hurting where do you think the best timing would be? I rarely get above 50 mph in my normal driving unless I have to jump on the highway for 5 minutes. Also, is there any documentation showing what the settings are on the Diablosport tune? I'm already happy with the difference in the way the truck runs/drives but figured it would take some time and tweaking to find the best settings. I'm lucky if I put 150 miles on it in a week so it will take me time to look for any improvements.
Thanks.

:edit - are the spark timing adjustments(the 3 ranges) only for WOT? My Predator says WOT next to the last 2 ranges but the first range it doesn't say WOT so I thought that was adding timing even in normal driving conditions.

I see now that the spark timing is all for WOT so my settings are meaningless for normal driving. I'll back them off since I'm not looking for WOT performance. I'm pretty happy with picking up .7 mpg so far and hope the computer learns the changes a little better. Needless to say, the UPS man took me at a light today because he was in a bigger hurry than I was!

Figured I might as well throw in an update. My last tank of gas came out to 15.7 mpg and that was with all around town driving and maybe 5 miles of highway. I don't even get into overdrive in my normal driving. I've also been using 93 octane and just filled up with 87 to see if there is any difference. It's great to be able to make the fuel adjustments and pick up 1.5 mpg so far. I'll post back if it continues to pick up mpg and I still need to get a good highway trip in to see how that does.

Last tank was up to 16.4 mpg and that was still mostly around town daily driving. It will be interesting to see how it does on a long highway run. But I'm very happy with the results and the way the truck runs/drives.
