2010 Camaro LS3..what's with all the spark retard PIDs?

Post by tmizer »

Hi, long time DS listener, first time poster :D

Got a couple questions after using a Trinity on my 2010 Camaro SS with LS3 engine and manual trans the past few days:

1. According to my logs, with either the 91 or 93 tunes, Spark Advance seems to "pulse" downward as Torque Management Spark Retard comes up - during steady state cruise. Is this normal? Can it/should it be tuned out in a custom tune?

2. Can someone define/differentiate the (at least) 3 spark retards? Torque Management Spark Retard, Knock Retard, and Total Knock Spark Retard.

3. Do the preloaded tunes (87, 91, and Diablo (93?)) target a leaner cruise AFR? My wideband seems to see a slightly lean AFR at steady state cruise. The wideband (an LC-1) is working well as it correlates at WOT with the dyno WB.

Thanks for any help or insight.

Wow, sorry, this got past me, I did not mean to skip over it.

1. Yes, this sounds like something we can adjust, post a copy of your original backup and last tune written please.

2.TMSPK retard is generally timing being pulled due to torque managament attempting to limit torque output for whatever reason. Knock retard is timing being pulled due to knock activity as detected by the Knock sensors. Total knock spark retard is how much total timing can be pulled for knock.

3. No, cruise AFR should ideally be unchanged.

Thank you Mike.

FYI, per my above post, I was getting some weird periodic TMSPK retard as well as what appeared to be a slow left front O2 sensor. I had a LC-1 wideband in the left rear O2 position showing consistently lean AFR. The left bank LTFT was slow and mostly negative as well. So I put the stock left rear O2 sensor back in and now the front is acting normal again (the left bank trim is acting like it should). Case solved.

Moral of the story: don't be lazy, pull out the welder and weld that bung in for your wideband today, not "I'll get to it later" :)
