Little Help with my 2002 7.3 tun - modify or custom?

Post by cogswg »

Hi - I just got my U7170 tuner. I have an '02 7.3 f-250 with a Banks Turbo, Waste Gate, intercooler, Exhaust, Six gun, S&B Intake, 50hp injectors, shift kit, & Blue print motor/rebuid. I run 40 inch tires on it today. Has stock Gears. May go to 38 inch tires soon.

I installed the 85HP tune. I am not sure how to modify the tune. Would like to adjust it since I already have a shift kit. Perhaps I should remove the Banks Shift Kit? Thoughts? Also, I need to adjust NOV / tire size but despite reading the posts here, I am not sure how to do thes items. I do not see a "modify tune".

Should I be installing a custom tune or I am good to just modigy this one?

Thanks for the help

After you select the 85 tune, choose modify tune, then modify parameters, and you'll get a list of all the adjustable params.

Thanks - got it, however, I am still not sure how to determine the Base NOV. I have two set of wheels. One set are 40x13.5R17 & the others are 38x13.5R24. I have stock gears. I set the Base NOV near 60 at this point and the truck seems to run much better but not sure where it should be.

Also - I have a shift kit. Do I need to make any adjustments to the shifting parameters?

NOV Adjust - This value represents eNgine speed Over Vehicle speed when the vehicle is in direct drive(OD off/3rd gear in a 04-08 F150) with the torque converter locked. The easy way to calculate this is using the following equation.

Tire Revs Per Mile x Axle Ratio divided by 60 = NOV

This parameter is used in some calibrations for transmission shift tables and is affected more with large changes in gears and tires.

Mike - can you tell me what NOV would be for a set of 38x13.5R24 Trail Grappler tires? If I do the math right it would seem to be about 35 but when I set the tune there the truck felt wrong. When I tried it about 60, it felt much better. Thoughts?

Tire revs per mile is 550, so 550 x your gear ratio divided by 60 will be your NOV. Example, 550x 3.73/60= 34.19

The tune is just not working correctly with my truck. Does not spool up fast at all under the rcommended settings. Tons of black smoke & poor throttle response. Thought I would give this another stab before resorting to returning it. I believe the issue may be based on the larger injectors / build on my motor that my truck has. See the description of the truck and mods above in this thread. Please suggest modifications to the parameters that might help or custom tune thoughts. I would like to get this right. If it would help, we can talk over the phone?

I would try the 110 tune..modify parameters on the shift pressure..firm them up to 30 to 35 at half throttle and wide open throttle(as a starting point). With the shift kit and the big tires(4.11 or 4.56 would be a lot better) it is going to kill your bottom end,but you do not want to remove the shift kit.You could very easily fry the clucthes IMO.BTW..best performance and milage from the 110 tune.

Thanks, I will firm up the shift pressure - Do you feel changing the axle ratio would help? It seemed to run better with the Base NOV set around 60 versus 34. Not were I should be considering the changes to the motor. The recommended setting of 34 for the size tires I have does not work at all.

Do you mean, change the axle ratio on the truck or the programmer? If you are going to go back to 38's you should be ok with the current gear ratio in the truck.I know several with 38's and 40's on stock ratios, there not to quick out of the hole, but we are talking about 8000lbs plus.
What kind of boost #s are you seeing with the 85hp tune.If I had to guess,I would say between 24 and 26lbs.My current set-up with a stock turbo is between 28 and 30(I did replace the compressor wheel to the 99' style/wicked wheel)

I was referring to the axle ratio on the programmer. I do not have any program installed at this point. I think the 110 program would be great but feel I am going to need a custom tune due to the larger injectors. It really took off when it finally spolled up with that tune but would really over fuel in the low rpm range. Tons of black smoke with no power.

I am only pushing about 23lbs of boost now. I am running the six gun Banks on level six without preditor installed. Seems to run much better overall but I still feel the preditor would add value if I could get the tune a little more specific for my truck. A friend of mine told me today that there is a guy at DP that will work with you on custom tunes for engines with 50hp injectors and bigger builds etc. Perhaps that makes sense.

Can anyone tell me if you need to install a custom tune when you have 150hp injectors? My truck just does not seem to run right with any of these tunes.

Yes you will need a custom tune. Which exact injectors are they?
