05 Duramax to 08 Duramax

I traded in my 05 Chevy 2500 on a 08 GMC 2500, both Duramax's. I'd like to know if I can update the U7185 to work with 08 GMC or if I should sell it aqnd if so is it year specific for a 04-05 or can buyer update it to work in a 06 and what all is needed to update?

No, you'd need a U7186 for the 08 model.

Your U7185 works on 04.5-05 LLY models.

It seems to me when I was dealing with this the last time,if the VIN had a L1 or L2 in it, it would work with that engine. I don't recall which one it needed to be. Does this mean anything to you or did I possibly get that from a service guy at the dealer?

8th digit is 1=U7180 (01-04)
8th digit is 2=U7185 (04.5-05)
Any 06 or newer (LLY, LBZ, LMM) uses the U7186 Predator.

His Vin# is 1GCHK23286F127297. Could he have 05 engine in his 06 with the 2 being in the 8th digit?

He has an 06 with an LLY, meaning he needs a U7186.

OK, thank you. The 2 in the 8th digit was wishful thinking on my part. 05-LLY, 06-LLY? It just seems like such a waste to be sitting in my closet.
