VPP issue in Predator even after RMA

Post by flaircraft »

I purchased a U7135 for my 2005 Magnum R/T about 2 months ago. When it arrived in the mail, I attempted to upload the 91 octane tune. The factory tune was saved to the Predator with no problems; however when I attempted to upload the new tune, the upload failed and the Predator indicated that I needed to upload the factory tune back into the car's computer. Right before the Predator told me that the 91 tune upload failed, I thought that I saw a flash inside the Predator and heard a small "pop" from the unit. I wasn't absolutely sure about this however so discounted it as my imagination. I tried to upload the factory tune but got the VPP error. At this point I sent the unit in for RMA.

After recieving the Predator back from RMA last week, I attempted to upload the 91 octane tune again. Just like before, downloading the factory tune went smoothly. But, when trying to upload the 91 tune, I definitely saw a flash from inside the Predator and also observed what appeared to be smoke appearing inside the unit, and smelled electronics smoke a couple minutes later. This occurred at the point where the Predator asks you to turn the key back to "on" during the 91 octane tune upload process. The Predator then said that the upload had failed, and to upload the factory tune again... so I tried and got the VPP error again.

Am I doing anything wrong? I never started the car during the process. The doors were always closed and all vehicle lights were always off. When the Predator asks me to turn the key off and then back on again, I turn the key to the "lock" position, and when asked to turn the key back on I turn it to the "on" position. Between "lock" and "on" is the "accessory" position. Should I only be going between "accessory" and "on"?

If I'm not doing anything wrong, could there be something wrong with my car?

Is it possible I got 2 faulty Predators in a row? Or if I recieved the same Predator back after repair, is there some other problem with it that makes it blow the electronics?

Damn 05s. Always messing up Predators. Did you guys ever figure out why the 05s seem to burn them out? Between this and the MDS issue, the 05 LXs are giving you guys extra work.

The 05s use a VPP circuit in the tool that no other models use....

I received the RMA'd Predator from UPS this morning and was able to successfully use it to upload the 91 octane tune today. No error messages were displayed and I didn't see any smoke or flash this time :) Thanks Diablosport!
