Tuner newb with used U7151 questions

Post by tomahawk »

I am completely new to tuners but I just bought a used U7151 for my 2005 F150 5.4L.

A couple of questions..

I haven't received it yet so I don't know what revision of the software is on it. If it is a unit that is older than what will accept the 9r revision, is there still a way to get the latest revision that it will accept?

Will this unit still retain any tweaks to the tuning that the last guy may have put in? (Does any user tuning tweak the pre-loaded tunes) I sure don't want to download something to my truck that someone may have changed enough to damage the engine.

I am sure that I will have more questions when I get it in my hands. I can't wait to get it. You guys will have to bear with me as I'm sure I may ask some really stupid questions trying to learn about the tuner.

Thanks.

Any u7151 can be updated to the latest.

Any tweaks someone else did will be gone once they restore the stock tune to their truck.

Okay, here is another dumb question.

In the manual located in the Updates/Downloads section, it states that there is one tune and it requires premium fuel. If you want to run 87 octane, you need to retard the spark on that program.

On the web page for the 7151, it reads like there are 4 canned tunes. 87 & 93 performance and the same with CAI.

Which one is correct?

Also, that manual says something about cycling the key but it never gives instructions on what that is. It doesn't really say anything other than don't open the door, turn on a light or start the truck in the process.

Old manual, there are 87, 91, and 93 octane tunes.
You'll also have a few CAI tunes to choose from.

cycling the key is turning it off then on.

Are the current preloaded tunes safe for towing? I am still waiting for my unit to arrive so I haven't read the latest manual but I saw something on another site that said not all canned tunes in tuners are towing safe.

I can tell a definite difference in the truck now that I have driven it a few more times.

I have wheels and tires of a different size arriving tomorrow. Do I reload the 87 tune over the already installed tune to change the tire size or do I need to return it back to stock and then load the tune again?

What is the difference between 9r04 and 9r11?

Enough to warrant an update?
