2009 Chevy Silverado, COMPLETE Electrical Shutdown

Post by cebner »

Need help -

I have a 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500LTZ with the 6.2L V8. Currently I'm running the Predator U7194 on the high octane tune. Recently, my truck will on occasion stall when I try to start it. This is not like it's a dead battery though, it's like the entire computer system is shutting off my truck. Then last night, things took a turn for the worse. I was driving to a friends place, going about 10 mph and about to turn on his street, when my truck had a complete shutdown. Like someone pulled the plug on my truck. Absolutely no electronics working, turn the key and nothing happens, no lights, nothing. It also happened to be in the 5th ward of Houston, which for those of you unfamiliar is arguably THE worst area of Houston to be in, especially for a white boy.

Bottom line is when I finally hooked up the predator the first time, with my door closed in the truck, the screen just started flashing like the programmer had crapped out on me. Then after a while of messing with it, I plugged in the programmer with the door open, and it worked. I was able to clear the error code and start my truck, even though it was hesitant to start the first time like I have described above. I did not write down the error code for the sake of getting the F**K out of the area I was in and doing it quickly, but if you guys have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to keep using my programmer because of the gains in HP and mpg's, but it's not worth breaking down again in the ghetto's of Houston.

Please, help me out here. I don't know what revision I have on the programmer right now, but it was the latest one as of 4/27/11, according to Vas.

Are the battery terminals tight? Sounds like a loose ground or something like that. Worth a look...check all the basics first.

I checked the terminals last night, everything was fine. I thought maybe a ground but I don't think that would explain the truck absolutely shutting down while I'm driving. It might explain the trouble starting it though

Quick story...Back in late '04, I gave my old work car ('90 Buick LeSabre) to my dad when we moved out of town (and I didn't need it anymore). Well, he was driving it to work one morning (before we moved) and it just died on him, all lights went out and everything, dead. Luckily, they had just left the car-pool parking spot, and they took the other guy's car to work. After he called to tell me, I went down there with my trailer. I checked the ground terminal at the battery and it was just enough loose to lose the connection. I tightened it up and then pulled it up on the trailer.

It could be another ground somewhere, or even a ground at the computer. I know that the computer ground was a problem with the '04 GM trucks and SUV's. It just seems wierd that the programmer would make it do that. You could, however, re-install the original tune and see if the truck still acts up. That would narrow it down a little.

Does it do the same thing with the stock tune in? Restore stock tune and if it continues blacking out, there's a problem with the truck. I know my truck did something similar and it was just a weak battery, it still showed 12v but VERY low amps. It caused my radio to stop at times, the gas gauge to bounce from full to empty to full, the doors to unlock, all kinds of wierd things.

I'm going to cover all the basis when I get home from work today, in my driveway, when it's light outside, and I don't have to worry about keeping my .45 loaded on my side. Hopefully I can find something. Thanks for the input, but i didn't know if any of the mods have seen or heard anything like this happening before.
