Factory tune, surging issue.

Post by Richard_Sawkins »

Posting here to see if anyone has a similar problem. Its with a 2010 Challenger R/T Auto. When accelerating, if in traffic for example, and the tranny has already shifted to third gear, at about 25 mph, when leaning on the gas, but not enough to kick down the transmission, the car surges horribly. If you kick the trans into 2nd, the car pulls hard. Its almost as if the transmission shifts into the next higher gear too quickly, probably for fuel economy. I hooked up the Predator, and logged data. MDS is turned OFF, the stock tune is loaded, trans shift firmness is ON. I am running No Ethanol 89 octane gasoline. While the surging takes place, the following was observed. As the pedal is pressed, there is a huge spike from the No2 knock sensor, and I am seeing 6 degrees of knock retard. This slowly drops to about 3 or 4 degrees until reaching about 3000 rpm when it drops off completely. If you kick the trans to the next lower gear there is a much smaller spike, and about 1 degree of knock retard for a very short period of time.

The car has done this since new btw..

Any comments or suggestions welcomed.

Mike, thanks for the quick reply. I forgot to mention that I tried that. Nothing seems to work on resolving this issue. Several people on challengerforumz have also got the same problem. Its a pity there is no way to increase the normal use shift points, and make it perform like the Dodge RAM pickups, I drove one with a V8, but no Hemi badges, and the transmission behaved superbly. The Challenger tranny acts like an old mans car. under gentle driving it will go to 5th by 40 mph. I will try to take a video and send it so see if this seems normal.

Richard, you say it's done this since you bought it, your running the stock tune and you haven't taken it back to the dealership to complain? I'd be back at the dealership yelling about the drivability issues.
