HELP! Ithink Im getting the run around from chevy dealer!

Post by santaman58 »

Okay here goes. Have 2500 miles on NBS 2007 silverado LTZ 6.0l with Max trailering. Having rough idle problems ...subtle but present. Also having what seems to be shifting problems/slight surging/tugging when under load and in V8 mode (not going back and forth form v8 to v4 mode either). Sorta acts like a torque converter or wrong shift points as it doesnt seem to know to shift down correctly. Bugs the crap outta me!

SO....took to dealer and they reprogrammed it and no help. Told me the truck doesnt have enough miles on it yet and it is still learning my driving habits. It is a so-called SMART truck! In time it will smooth out the surging /tugging as it learns my needed shift points....HUH???? Anyone ever here this one yet? Also the subtle rough idle is inherent with the 6.0 liter engine...no fix.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems and if so, did the Predator fix it? Im really sorta worried to use the predator as I see alot of 6.0l avalanche owners are having serious problems. PLEASE let me know if you can offer info that will help. THANKS!!

i wish i had some great info on that subject, but all i can say is wow! what the hell is the world of trcuks coming to when your truck has to LEARN how you drive and adjust itself?? that sounds like a crock, but i havent a clue if thats true or not? i have the old body style 07, and i havent encountered this problem with mine, the steering kinda sucks on mine, but it doesnt buck or idle rough.... mine idles at 500-600 rpm, kinda low i thought? god, i miss the old truck days, when you didnt have a computer to deal with.... i think gm tried to dummy proof their trucks with all these computer controls and torque management so they can assure you cant hurt the engine or tranny, and they can give you a good warranty that way....but then the other trucks on the road are blasting around us. i had a new tundra blow me out bad, real bad... a freekin quad cab 4x4.... i guess his computer was cooler than mine. lol!!!!

yes, the new vehicles learn and adapt to how you drive... this is why, if you disconnect your negative battery cable for about 20 minutes, then reconnect it and go for a drive, your vehicle feels better than new! it's snappier, quicker, etc etc, cuz it hasn't "re-learned" your driving habits and/or fueling adjustments yet... after a few days it'll be back to how it was before...

After reading this I have to laugh ... and excuse my rant in advance.

The software weenies get paid to sling code into the PCM/computer that "adjusts" our vehicle's performance parameters after learning ...simply to avoid warranty repair work. Then, when we complain at the dealer that the vehicle is sluggish, has a clunk in the driveline (like in 50% of Chevy's trucks - check Full Size Chevy forum on this), or has other performance/repair issues, they hook up some diagnostic computer and tell us it will be alright and that it's "normal" per some TSB. Then, the dealer bills for warranty work that they've completed. Don't forget to go check the TSBs ... they're beyond comical in how performance, clunks, chirps and the like are explained as "normal". In NO WAY would these vehicles sell if new and yet they're typically vehicles with less than 10K miles!!

So, does GM really not understand why they're losing market share? When the Toyota Tundra, after what, three years, is able to come over here, rip past the domestic trucks, haul more, and command a $35K price tag, and get it, when is GM going to change tactics? ... I guess after either the GMC or Chevy truck line is closed. Five years off in my opinion. I'd thought they were making a dually in less than two years - uh-oh, look out.

Agreed about the old days - think back to the late 60's/early 70's when the Datsun B210 was at the red light with 65HP and you're Chevelle was @ 425HP. You'd probably (not PROLLY) be able to blink your eyes and look back at the Datsun rocking back and forth after the 1.94 60 foot time.

Since then, GM's dominance has been reversed because of some bean counter wanting to reduce HP/Torque because of the Transmission//Driveline departments inability to make a transmission/components that can handle the power a vehicle "could" put to the pavement. That's called cheap. They know how to make it right - they opt to make it cheap for profitability.

Works out for Diablosport - they make a product we want to buy. If we want to burn rubber, we should be able to! Point is, Chevy shouldn't have to make something so ridiculously non-responsive, probably retarding timing 20+ degrees to avoid driveline failure!

I like GM products but I, like most, am less than pleased at their warranty/repair ethic. I fear I may be looking at an import as the only alternative if they continue the games they play.

you know, what sucks even worse is....now that i have started these performance mods, i am recently becoming aware of just how much MORE performance there is in an import!! go drive a toyota tundra with the 5.7 i-force, then get back in your gm product. HUGE difference!! i saw one run at the track the other night, WAY faster than me... sure they have a bit bigger engine, but the performance of the engine/tranny combo is superior to what i have. even the nissan titan was blowin around me....and they were both stock as they could be!! the tundra had a six speed tranny, 401 tq, 381 hp....410/430 gear ratios....and it CAN handle the power.

when you get over 350hp in our trucks, you had better beef up the tranny and rearend, cause its gonna break!! it pisses me off to have to mod every part of my trcuk to keep up with a stock quad cab, 4x4 freekin tundra! really does. if they werent such an uglyass truck, i would buy one for real!

maybe i will be the first to do a driveline <engine/tranny> swap from a tundra to a sierra. i think it would rip.
and just for reference, go to <dragtimes.com> and view some of the times of the new tundra.....1/4 mile at low 14's, a few in high 13 zone. i think mine ran around 15.5-16's bone stock.....sucks!

its up for debate i guess.

Yep ... it will get worse. But you've got to ask why GM doesn't get it. The answer is about pushing product and realizing that the majority of people don't care. GM can pull the wool over most of the people, most of the time - your warranty rep at the dealer, for instance. So they do it ... bean counters are all padding their golden parachutes and have no interest in really addressing a quality product. They're screwed by the union guys so they're holding onto as much profit as they can get while they're fingernails gradually lose grip.

Handwriting's on the wall. When Toyota releases a dually, they're going to clobber GM/Ford & Dodge. Imports will just continue to grab truck market share as did the car imports in the 80's/90's. GM is toast.

But yeah, the Toyota doesn't appeal to me either. I sat in Jessica Barton's (Sony spokeschick/Barton twins) truck last week. I didn't relate to the styling being a Chevy guy but the room was there - I mean, it had more room than mine + is sat higher than my truck -- it was a 2WD!. The price tag was like $34K so people are paying it. GM is toast ... oh wait, I already said that.

Cough.... Don't make me puke..... When that american designed, american engineered, american built (with japanese robots), japanese owned, with japanese parts, truck, which fortunately has become the most recalled american built vehicle in history (too bad the japanese are so good at marketing aka, paying off the media or you would know about it), the tundra, blows up and you have to wait 6 weeks to get a replacement part, because that's how long the boat takes to get parts over here, remember how much you luved it when it was running.... Just don't put an american flag on it please...

Mine is all american, does 11.62 @ 127.8 in the quarter, and I still get 24mpg. That's american, not some jap crap parts (now china crap parts) truck.... lol

85% of japanese manufacturer cars are now made from chinese parts, just wait for it to catch up....

I'll take Canadian and mexican parts over Chinese parts, any day... or toys for that matter....

    ah, our friend corvette guy!

i agree, your corvette is cool, fast, and pretty. but we/.... i in particular, was referring to the truck market, not the car market. the corvette is gm's legacy, it's almost the most expensive vehicle you can buy from GM isnt it?? if i am not mistaken, just the 07-08 c7 runs around 50-60K, and a nicely outfitted Z-06 is about 80-82K....at least thats what they are at our stealership. if i paid almost a housemortgage for a car, it fuckin better be cool, fast, and pretty!!!!! seriously!

what i am concerned with is the dominant towing, acceleration, and overall performance of the import market over GM...mainly toyota and nissan. my truck gets better gas mileage, but thats it. if i had lots of money to throw away on a vehicle, i probably would have gotten myself one like yours.....but i didnt. i chose a truck because i am a man, and i have a boat, and have a blue collar job that requires throwing dirty things in the back of my vehicle from time to time.....i need something that works for me and will tow something, unless your vette is fitted with a reese class iii hitch......and it may be, but i doubt it.

i am trying to mix my daily driver with a little performance, and my point was that it takes a lot of mods just to get up to the stock performance of the two trucks i have afore mentioned. i could get a little fox body mustang and run 10's in the 1/4 for less than $10K if that were my goal, but it is not. i just really hope toyota and nissan dont try and corner the market on v-8 sportscars.....cause i like your pretty corvette too much!!!

More info about 2007 NBS Silverado

    Post by santaman58 »

Has been to 2 different dealers service shops now and the 2nd dealer sent a mechanic for a ride along. He was very reasonable and informed me that the new silverados and maybe other makes act this way. WELL....if this is normal then I recommend NOBODY buy one of these trucks(unless you plan to use a predator cause you'll need it)...it is absolutely the worst driving truck I have ever owned from a mechanical standpoint! PERIOD! AFM SUCKS! Im sure most of the issues I have been experiencing stem from that...i!!!! I own a tahoe, had a recent S10 and have a corvette and not one of them drives like this piece of crap! PERIOD! I am so DAMN HAPPY that the predator now has support to turn off the AFM as it is absolutely worthless!!!!! WORTHLESS!!!!!!!!!!!! I am currently ready to buy a predator and hopefully that will address the concerns! I will post again when I do that!!!

I'll have to go take a test drive to see what you guys are talking about, but there are all kinds of new standards coming in the next 10 years, this is going to be the 70's all over again, get ready for performance to go down the toilet...

I own an 07 Silverado NBS with the 5.3L engine, it has12k miles on it. I have not had any problems with surging or shifting problems. The only problem I have had is that stupid torque management. No balls from the get go. I have to get a Predator to kill that "feature".

Sorry, but I have to rant too......

I found my truck impressive being that I used to drive a 91' GMC. The 99 rides better, cruises better, more comfort and space. Honestly tho, I had around 270hp to the wheels on my 91, (about the same as my 99' is now) and it took the power with pride. On my 99' after removing the TQM, I am terrified to smash the gas like I used to in my 91'! I keep hearing horror stories about these transmissions and it worries me. How could a 700R4 be tougher than a 4l60E? So when you look at it financially, I could have made a rocket out of my 91', ate Tundras all day AND had money to spare!

I believe the imports will rule again like they did before. Toyota is looking at making tougher, faster trucks while GM is looking at putting Hybrid engines and little diesels in their trucks! The only thing they got right in the next year or so is the use of a six speed. "Hey GM can we get rid of the torque management now?" Lets start small. Make it faster than a Hemi, without safety measures to prevent drive line explosions, than focus on making it tougher than a Tundra! It happened before it will happen again.....look at it this way..... Tell me where you can find an American econo rocket that can beat a rice burner in the same price range! SRT-4 maybe, oh wait! Its a Mitsubishi motor!

And why the hell doesn't GM offer better deals on 06-07 vehicles now? I had two friends buy 08' Rams because they walked away with a more powerful, faster, muscle car of a truck for thousands less than a year old GM!!! WTF? I don't get it, i really don't! I know quality wise you get what you pay for but most people don't see it that way.

I think i'd do what sickRedsierra said, buy a GM and do a Toyota engine/drive train swap. Either that or just take my older GM and buy a performance built transmission and rearend. Beef the motor up and call it a day. GM needs to pick up the pace. Toyota will crush them if thay don't. My mother had a 94 4Runner v6 that she beat the piss out of and got 230K out of it and it had to catch on fire to die! lol.

    Ok Im done!
