Need Help...possible inTune issue? start up idle!

Post by BlackZ71Silverado »

Ok here's the problem. Ever since I had my truck (2010 Silverado 5.3L) I had a "canned" DiabloSport tune in it. I was running an Airaid CAI with the 87 Octane tune without issue. I recently switched and installed a Volant CAI, running with same tune. Right after the Volant install I have been having trouble with cold starts. Immediately after start, the truck stubles and spits, almost stalls then will idle up like normal. Now with the Volant kit there was supposed to be a supplied o-ring to use with the MAF, it did not have one so I just left the OEM ring on there. Is it possible that the OEM o-ring is to thick and doesn't allow the MAF to sit in the correct position or doesn't that matter? OR is this an inTune issue I am having? Went over the CAI several times and everything is tight and installed properly.
I posted this on the gm-trucks forum without anyone having a clue, hopefully someone here can help out.

Very simple solution here.... restore the truck to the stock tune and then give it a few days. Does the problem/symptom go away?

I'll have to give that a shot. Was wondering if the o-ring on the MAF sensor had it sitting to high in the tube. The Volant ring is supposed to be thinner allowing it to sit more in the center of the tube. Does it make a difference if the MAF position is slightly off?

clocking the MAF is important as the airflow must pass over the sensor without turbulance/flutter. There should be a keyway /slot on the MAF itself and on the original ducting... you should be able to eyeball it as to where it should sit properly. Oil in/on the MAF and/or an over oiled filter can also cause these symptoms. Use CRC sensor clean to clean the inside of the MAF if there is any oily residue.
Have you logged and dialed in your tune yet? If not wait until you solve this problem first.

He has a drop in MAF instead of the whole unit being part of the intake tube. It only goes in a slot on the side of the tube. I would go back to stock and recheck the install and see if the problem goes away, I have a K&N Aircharger and had no problems on the 87 tune.

and yes the 0-ring makes a difference with those intakes as far as how it seals up... have seen it before...

better find that o-ring...

Appreciate it thanks a lot, I appreciate the information........sent email to their customer service about it with no response, going to call and find out. It did not come with the kit. In the mean time, going to try different o-rings to see which one makes the problem go away.

I think my Volant on the 03 SS used the stock throttle body, it's been a though.

The issue is NOT with the throttle body. It is with the 0-ring that seals the MAF into the hole. Volant is supposed to supply the correct one with the kit and they did not. My OEM MAF o-ring seems to be to thick, causing a start up problem and truck runs like crap.

No of fence but it goes in one way only should have an arrow on it pointing towards the air flow path. My does and it just drops in the hole.

Yeah, it's about impossible to install it the wrong way. The electrical connection is not long enough to allow it to be installed backwards, no way you would be able to get it plugged in.

When it was in my Airain CAI it dropped right in. When I switched over to the Volant, it was a really snug fit because of the OEM o-ring being bigger than the one Volant is supposed to send....It would be much easier if they would just make an adjustment to the intake tube to allow for the regular o-ring to be used. Sounds more practical to me.

Did your Volant CAI come with a replacement/different sized o-ring?

I know this is a long shot but would you happen to know the actual size of the correct o-ring?

I have been trying to deal with Volant customer service and they keep telling me "disconnect the battery", they don't understand that it was done before install and is not going to fix this problem. They also keep telling me that the o-ring "should have been in the box", which it wasn't and that's why I have this probelm. When I asked them the o-ring size, I was told thinner than stock and they could not give me a diameter or thickness.

EDIT : PROBLEM SOLVED

in case this happens to anyone else, the proper o-ring size is #57
