Help needed.. is my diagnostic code a serious issue?

Post by tmalsack »

My check engine light came on and the Predator showed me code P0128:
Cooling Sys Error / Thermostat Perf
Coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature.
Last summer I had a 180 thermostat put in, could that cause this as it has been in the low 20 degrees for weeks now? Is this a serious issue that should be fixed now, Christmas has tapped out my play money! Thank you all for being on this forum to help out us "mechanicly impared" people. :?:

P0128 can be turned off in a custom tune. should be able to pass emissions on one method.

tmalsack,

question about your t-stat: what brand and part#? does it have the bypass blocker?

a stat like a Milodon 180*, part#: mil-16406 without bypass blocker is more likely to cause a P0128, than a Jet 180* part#: JET-10183 which has a bypass blocker.

stock stat design has a bypass blocker.

The Jet throws codes a lot too. The NAPA seems to be the most reliable for not throwing codes. They changed part numbers though, and now nobody can find it.

what was the old Napa part#? any parts person who knows their stuff should be able to find new# with old#, unless the stat is discontinued.

Stant part# 48799 is a 190* stat that is supposed to be fairly code free.

P0128 sensitivity can depend on vehicle.

my 05 Ram had no P0128 with Jet 180, even before custom tune.

and some vehicles are kinda touchy, and have a P0128 easily.

The box from the old ones I had says THM160. I've called several NAPAs and none of them seem to be smart enough to tell me the new part number.

That was the 180° thermostat for the 5.7 and 6.1 Hemi's.

well, that is a bummer.

what happens if you ask for a 5.7/6.1 Hemi t-stat? Napa have the new Hemi's in their system?

t-stats for 1971-1978 Dodge 360-440cid engines will fit 5.7 & 6.1 Hemi's, but I don't think any of them have the bypass blocker.

Actually I just checked their website. The 180 for the 03-11 Hemi is Part number THM455778, and costs $17.04. May be the same for the later ones too, not sure.

My NAPA thermostat is a #165 it is in my 6.1L Super Bee and have not had any problems. I do however put the Bee to bed in the winter and then drive the RAM.

not sure about 2013, need to call my local dodge dealer parts dude and find out if 2013 uses same t-stat still.
