Just Ordered Diablo for Z-85

Post by DaleHeller »

Okay, I 'bit the bullet' and ordered my Diablo Predator - now having second thoughts about some of the details.

I have the Z-85 option on an ECSB with 5.3L and 3.23 gears with 20" tires, Magnaflow, Volant w/ Ram air. Not sure about the transmission - 4L60E probably (?). Truck is real sluggish.

Will the Diablo really help this and should I be concerned about the Flex Fuel 85% ethanol on this thing? Is the U7193 the right unit, and can this slug be woken up to act like a real truck !

I did get the USB kit (just so I can understand better what is going on in there) and perhaps tweak a bit.

Appreciate any help you guys can provide a newbie to all of this...

You did not say what year the truck is, so its tough to say if thats the correct part number.
U7193 is for 04-05 trucks.
It will work fine with the flex fuel truck.

It's the 2005, not very bright on my origiinal post - thanks Mike.

Based on what you said, I should be okay...now if UPS would get here...

I have an 05' Avalanche 5.3L Flex and the only improvment i noticed was part throtle responce(with TQ MGMT disabled). I also used the U7193. You may want to cancel your USB order cause the U7193 does NOT have the ability for user upgrades, user software updates or data logging. As a matter of fact you can't monitor your AFR, adjust spark advance (except WOT), get custom tunes via the internet or any of the other fine features that we assumed all predators have. Also Mikel, I am getting 1-2deg of KR accelarating on the 93 octane tune. If I install my factory tune I get 0.00KR. My LTFTs are dialed in and I,ve tried several different brands of fuel. I can't adjust my spark outside of WOT. How would I fix this? I'm sure to hell not going to pay a CMR dealer to write a custom tune or pay to send it to DIA for a tune after spending $400.00 for this POS. My mods are as follows:

S&B CAI
Gibson catback
Stock MAF
U7193
05' Chevy Avalanche Flex 5.3L(L-59)
Auto(M-30)2-wd
Mods:
S&B CAI
Pace Setter LTs & ORY
Gibson single Swept side CAT-BACK
4.10 Gears w/ Detroit Tru-Trac & 285/75/16 BFGs

You didn't notice the removal of the PE delay? No increase in shift pressures?

No reason not to have the cables. Plus all of these things are planned for upgrades for this tool....
As a matter of fact you can't monitor your AFR, adjust spark advance (except WOT), get custom tunes via the internet or any of the other fine features that we assumed all predators have.
Not sure why you would assume that the tool could read A/F ratio...that requires a wideband no matter what. Plus it CAN indeed get custom tunes from online or any of our CMR dealers. What other features do you feel you are missing?
Also Mikel, I am getting 1-2deg of KR accelarating on the 93 octane tune. If I install my factory tune I get 0.00KR. My LTFTs are dialed in and I,ve tried several different brands of fuel. Well, there is tons of usefull info on this forum about how to address these issues. It doesnt help that you have declared the tool a POS, even though it does everything it is supposed to.
Is this a quick blip of KR during the shift, if so it is fine.
If this is KR at WOT and stays there for a full WOT pull, then you should pull a bit of timing as you may not have great gas in your area.

Now I am concerned, I thought it was teh U7194 that had not had the online and data capture feature as yet?

Are you saying, I can't do captures, etc with the USB and get updates yet?

I'm going be very disappointed if the Z-85 slug I have does not get a signficant boost (12-20 hp) in performance...

Does the U7193 have data logging, are there updates?

What's the scoop?

The U7193 does not have logging, only live data monitoring...currently.
Updates are in the works for all GM tools that do not log to allow them to log and be internet updateable.
The 93 tune will provide the gains you are looking for, no doubt.

OK Mike... I may have gone a bit off the deep end with my posts. Declaring the tuner a "POS" was unfair considering other handhelds on the market. My apologies for being so rash! I was a little worked up after reading other post on TCM updates. It did not help to read some people were waiting over 18MOS for this update. So, let me try to aproach this differently. Here it goes in no perticular order.

1st..... I've tried 5 different brands of fuel each being a full tank. Tough to assume it could be bad gas. The KR last seceral seconds during part throttle accelaration(1000-2500rpm) not WOT. I did notice the lack of PE delay. But accelarating, from a dead stop, @ WOT is sluggish till 2grand. More so than with the factory tune. Yes, I did notice the extra shift pressure. So much so that it harshly slams into gear even @ part throttle. This does not seem to change unless I reinstall the factory tune. The ONLY noticable improvements was part throttle accelaration.

2nd..... Having the cables can't hurt for FUTURE updates. But I purchased the cable set with the assumption (as others have done) that I would at least be able to update my programmer via the internet; only to find out, after reading the post on this forum, that it could NOT be upgraded via my internet. I can not use the cable for logging, uploading, or downloading. The U7193 does not CURRENTLY support this to the best of my knowledge. It would help if consumers could read this on the product page instead of " All standard DiabloSport Predator features" included. That statement could be perceived as having these features since no standard features for all predators are listed. After reading other post about TCM updates and the time frame involved; I would not recommend getting the cable hookups cause it could take a very long time for these updates to hit the prepaid consumer. At which point, I (and others with the U7193) will have to pay shipping to send it back to DIAs so it can be updated. But only if we havn't lost our little sales receipt, within this unknown time frame. If that happens, then we are stuck spending more money for the programmer to be updated. Depending on the time frame of the release; we may not even own the vehicle or the 7193 any longer @ which point money was wasted on the cable kit. This is also why I said it would be money better spent on a real dyno tune as most tuners will allow you to get free retunes within a certain time frame. And the tune will be dead on for the specific mods installed on any givin vehicle. If the U7193 had these features (and others) a dyno tune would not be needed until serious mods had been done.

3rd..... How can I get custom tunes online if my programmer is not internet upgradeable???

4th..... I assumed the predators could decode AFR since the PCM needs to know this value at some point to properly make adjustments. I've read others posting their AFRs and wrongfully assumed some models had this capabillity. If I'm wrong, I am sorry for assuming!

last...... I would like to have the following features on my U7193 as they would allow me to properly tune my vehicle for present and future upgrades;

-Data logging-.. (driving @ 50+mph, watching your handheld and jotting #'s is NOT safe)(difficult for most to properly adjust LTFTs)(better yet, it would be awesome if I could attach my programmer to my laptop for extensive & accurate logging)

-Spark adjustments-..
@ any trottle position (your product page says the U7193 can adjust spark @ 2-4k & 4-6K but it does not say i can only adjust it @ WOT)

-AFR would be GREAT-..... but if it can't be done with a handheld I will have to invest in a wideband

-internet upgradeability-.... for firmware, software and custom tunes. (paying a CMR dealer should only be required if major engine mods have been done)

P.S. Mike, I'm glad you over looked my other post and took ten minutes to reply to this post. It does help calm people like me when we go ape-shit. Thanks

1. Part throttle KR is tough to figure out.
Honestly, it could be false, or it may be that you need to replace the MAP sensor. Do you get a CEL for the knock sensors when this happens?
I can fix the shifting in a custom tune no problem.
2. The cables will allow you to upload tunes to your PC or downlaod tunes to the Predator.
3. Simple, you have them emailed from either a dealer or from us if it is something I feel needs to be addressed in a custom tune (like the excessive shift presure).
4. Stock PCMs generally have no idea what the actual A/F is. All they really know is when the narrow band 02 sensors are at 14.7:1 (stoich).

Datalogging, and internet update capability is coming for this tool.
Part throttle spark adjustment is much more complicated that one line in a handheld tool. It would require access to multiple spark tables, which needs to be done in CMR, by someone that understands the different tables.

Thanks

Well no! I get no cel for the knock sensor. But I have noticed a mild Knocking sound, especially @ idle! It started doing this about a week ago(around the time I first noticed the KR) after several WOT pasees shifting @ 6 grand. I'm starting to think it may be an internal issue(piston slap, valve train or spun bearings) Thanks anyway!

I can fix the shifting in a custom tune no problem.

Glad to here this Mike. I have LTs and ORY to install first; then I will attempt to email my tune to you. Will the LTs and ORY require any additional tuning for the programmer?

4. Stock PCMs generally have no idea what the actual A/F is. All they really know is when the narrow band 02 sensors are at 14.7:1 (stoich).

Makes sense. But how are others on here getting their AFR from data logging with the preator?

Datalogging, and internet update capability is coming for this tool.
Any idea how far along yall are with these updates? Please don't say "SOON".
Just a general idea of how far along the process is will suffice!

I can answer a couple of these for ya...

Yes - the LT headers and ORY will need changes in the tune... Mike can incorporate the proper adjustments in the custom tune he makes for ya.

The AFR others are getting with the Predator is the "commanded" AFR from the ECM... it's what the ECM/PCM is calling for the AFR to be - but that doesn't mean that's what it "actually" is. Although, I have seen it where the commanded AFR on the predator is pretty damn close to the actual AFR on a wideband readout.

Cool! I am a little curious what paramaters will have to be modified for the LTs. So, when the U7193 is updated to include logging will it be able to read the "commanded" AFR?

the parameters will not be anything that is adjustable via the predator... they will create a custom tune for you using their CMR software...

I'm sure whatever parameters you're able to view on the screen right now when viewing the real time data, is what you'll get in the log file... as they are the same....

No, since the PCM does not contain this info.
This parameter was added into the PCM with the E40 in the LS2/4 vehicles.
