not too impressed

Post by bluechallenger »

Just got tuner in. I the put the 93 cai tune in.2010 challenger 5.7 hemi auto. So far it didnt seem like it did anything powerwise. Do i still have to pull fuse #2 to reset the pcm? The car has been driven very lightly for the past few weeks. With the c&l intake, and flowmaster american thunder exhaust it wont break loose the tires with and without the tune without traction control. Did a 0-60 and it was just over 6 seconds. Any ideas?

Its knocking, guaranteed. You need to tweak the tune for your car, location and gas.

Ya I've finally just installed mine and threw on the 93 perf tune.. Didn't notice any difference whatsoever.. In fact, ran a 0-60 @ 7.2. I've got the mopar cai and Airaid tb spacer on my 2012 challenger 3.6. Before my cai, tb spacer, and diablo I was running between 7-7.5 0-60s so I've literally not gained anything from these upgrades. Any suggestions on what to do?

Just crossing t's and dotting I's. You have 93 gas in there with the tune right?

A trinity isn't going to give you leaps and bounds. I was expecting 15 crank horse. From what I read spacers do nothing. And your cai prolly ga e you 10-15 at the crank too. So 30hp -20%. 24hp?

Doesn't work like that. You can just add the gains together. The peak gains happen at different rpms. 15 + 15 doesn't equal 30. And who's to say that any of those gains happen at the engines power peak? You could start with 300hp, do the mods and still have a peak of 300 or even less. The important thing is the shape of the curve and the area under it, not how high it goes.

The spacer is a piece of garbage. I have no idea why LX/LY owners keep buying those paperweights. They do absolutely nothing except make tuning harder. An intake on a V6 isn't making tons of power either, maybe 5hp, if you're lucky. And then theres the tune, which needs to be tweaked for the car its being used on, or you may even see a power loss.

Ya but peak is usually what people go by. And ya I know this addon(10hp) paired with this one(10hp) give synergy(25 total not 20).

Not necessarily. 10+10 could equal 12 or 15 or some other number. You'll only get more than the combined, individual, gains if one of them eliminates a restriction thats holding the other back.

An intake can add +10 HP and like Mike said the top end could not change at all.

The +10 could happen at 3k rpm and the company will advertise +10hp.

OP,
Log your ST and LT Knock Retard. If you are getting more than 2 ST or any LT, then try the 91 tune on 93 gas. Although its not the best gauge, my 13 RT is getting a 5.1 0-60 completely stock which makes me think you have either been really light on the pedal (TCM and PCM will adapt to slow driving) or your getting crappy gas.

well said, but in reality, the 10 rwhp gain often advertised by CAI manufacturers is generally achieved very high in the rpm range, well past peak power, and often beyond the factory shift point :)

Not always the case, but when it seems to good to be true.....

So how do you find out if the car is knocking? did a data logging on the computer but not sure how to tell if it is knocking or not

All great info here. I understand I won't see big gains from the cai and tb spacer on the 3.6 but I was expecting something. I'm new to the whole tuning scene and I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I am running the 93 vpower from shell.

Especially considering when I purchased the vehicle the previous owner clocked a 6.22 as the best time.. Stock far as i know. I haven't been able to come anywhere near that (6.97 being my best).

Bluechallenger,
Make sure your logging the Knock ST Retard and Knock LT Retard, I believe it is even in the pre loaded layouts. 1-2 ST retard is acceptable, if you are getting anything over 2 or seeing ANY LT retard then I would start switching up gas stations and consider a catch can.

2012challenger,
You dont know what any of the conditions were when he ran the 6.22 (or if he was being truthful). The 2012 3.6 is rated at 6.8 so you are right at where you should be stock. You should be monitoring your knock as well as it may be hurting your times. Not trying to be rude but in my opinion posting your 0-60 or 1/4 times without knowing what your knock numbers are is useless. Monitor your numbers then post back so we can see what its doing. You mentioned your friend has a dyno, thats awesome if you can get free runs. You might want to also check out the TT dyno app. You can log specific PID's and get a pretty close dyno graph with that software so you can see how your mods are affecting your car.

My girlfriend just bought a 2012 3.6 charger, with only 16k miles it already had a gunked up throttle body and intake manifold. I cleaned the TB with some carb cleaner, wiped out the manifold as much as I could without taking it off, reset the computer, installed a catch can and loaded the 91 tune with 93 gas. She was averaging 22 mpg before and now shes getting 28. Took a trip to Austin over the weekend and averaged 35 on the highway. These simple little ''mods'' make a big difference. I havent done any 0-60 runs because I dont want her racing around town but even she said that she can tell that it is running much stronger.

Ya he said he could do a few pulls and help out. In the meantime, I'm gonna install the 91 tune and see how that goes. Interesting that her average is 22.. I'm sitting at 18 now. I'll try cleaning tb and intake. I've looked a lot of places and couldn't find a catch can.. Where did you come across that? LT and ST knock should be logged during 0-60 or in a steady rpm range?
