93 Octane Tune

Post by catman50 »

I have a 2013 Challenger R/T 5.7 automatic. I just installed the 91 octane tune. I love it! I also have added a Mopar CAI and Mopar catback exhaust.

My questions is this:

Can I load the 93 Octane tune and use 91 octane fuel> I am in California and we don't have 93 octane anywhere near me..... just curious

You can try it, but I doubt you would see any improvement in performance. Best case is nothing different observed; worst case is a noticeable degradation in performance.

The 93 tune's spark/timing adjustments would be too aggressive for the 91 octane gasoline to handle. So if you run it, excessive detonation would begin occurring when engine is accelerating or otherwise operating under load.

Once that begins, the PCM will begin retarding the ignition timing until the detonation stops, effectively dialing back the 93 octane tune, thus negating most of the reason for running that tune to begin with.

You can try adding some octane booster to the 91 octane gasoline to see if it can handle the 93 octane tune, but I would not get my hopes up about that route. I have had only limited success with octane boosters doing much to eliminate detonation I've observed in my testing.

there would be no added benefit. you should stick with the 91 octane tune.
