2014 Ram 1500 8 speed 3rd gear TC issue

Post by ksrracer »

I've noticed that since loading the 87 octane tune on my 2014 Ram that when slowing for a turn around 10-13 mph where the trans is in 3rd gear(verified by the Electronic Range Selector) and I gently accelerate down the road the lockup or unlock of the torque converter is pretty noticeable. It will rev through 3rd like normal than hit pickup/unlock with a noticeable shift feel and rev out more until hitting 4th gear. No slippag. Its definitely the TC either locking or unlocking. If i catch it just right with enough throttle it feels like when you let a clutch out with too many revs. Is there anyway of making that engagement softer?

well, we dont have any ability to talk to the tcm on the 8 speeds, so it may be linked to the reduced torque management....

So no tuning was done to the TCM at all via the canned tune? Is this going to hurt the trans or TC at all?

Also is this something the trans will adapt to and make smoother as time goes on?

We could try enabling some of the trans TM to see if it smooths out.
Are you sure you're not feeling mds engaging/disengaging at higher speeds maybe?

Positive. When you put the gear selector in 8 it shuts off the the MDS and shows the gear you're in to the left of it. Accelerating from a stop it does not do it. Its only when slowing for a turn around 10-13 mph when the trans is naturally in 3rd gear and I accelerate normally. it will accelerate and sort of lunge into TC lockup before shifting to 4th.

It literally happens when inching the throttle to acceelerate at that speed and the TC lockup hits like a lurching feeling than hits 4th gear.

So what I'm experiencing is due to the reduction of torque management in general you're saying?

I talked to Vas a little bit ago and he recommended data logging the event. Should I post that here or send it via email?
