Error in manual

Post by Whiterock1 »

Going over the manual yesterday, I noticed a significant error. On page 16, step 4 it says to "start the engine" during a Restore to factory tune. Obviously, you DO NOT want the engine running anytime you are communicating with the ECM. While most will recognize this, it still should be changed for inexperienced, first time users. I'm surprised it hasn't been noted before.

Thats a big difference in US and Foreign ECMs. I've noticed that with both the BMW and the Audi, the engine needs to be running, or you can't talk to the ECM. Strangest shit, sitting there with a laptop, plugged into the port doing coding with the engine running.

you mean for logging, or flashing?

flashing while it runs is damn near impossible, as you have to erase the flash before you write a new one...
Unless they are using dual flash PCMs where it runs off one and you can flash the other while its running?

Besides that, we have uncovered some really shady, BS 'tuning' being performed by some, where all they are doing is 'quick adjust' type changes like we do on DCX, which is not actually flashing or editing the pcm at all, it just does stuff like shift firmness, shift points, etc. It seems lots of people have paid BIG money for supposed tunes that were done while the vehicle was idling in the driveway....sucks for them.

One of our former sales guys had an E55 AMG. Met a local dude who said he was the king of ferrari tuning, didnt like to mess with Mercedes that much as ferraris are much cooler. offered to tune his car for him, for free ;)
Came to his house, spent less than 5 minutes in the car, while it was running, and told him it was tuned. I was appalled that someone who worked here fell free that crap, but he was a moron :)

We had baselined the car previously, and when we redyno'd it, there were no appreciable gains. But it did shift firmer :)

For coding the computers. Its a flash I guess, because it is writing to them.

They must have a backup or default file that runs the car while you load the new info. It stays in the background until you change the operating system, then goes to that once written. Would eliminate the need for storing the factory tune on the tool, but certainly makes for a more complicated ECM, but...that's the Krauts.

I have a feeling theres a lot more than just one ECM. When you're coding, you have to open and close a bunch of different modules (theres like 50 of them), so I'm thinking each one might be separate. Check out the attachments. Each module for each system has to be selected separately. For a newb, it's pretty intimidating.

no, thats exactly why he wants us to develop a tool like intune or trinity for those cars, to allow tuning for the masses :)

Exactly. I mean, how many people are gonna go into all that and start doing long coding and stuff? Its just not something that your average person is gonna be able to do.

Hahahahaha....no, really. A professional couldn't deal with all that. Radio, Digital Radio, and Sound System on 3 different panels and a 2nd Radio listed on the same panel as the Sound System, HVAC? :D Hahahahaha :) NO WAY, Admit it Levy, you made those up! :P Special Function? Twice?, What kind of undefined Special Functions? Hahahahaha    Good one Levy....that's the best one I've seen today!

Wish it was fake, but alas, its real. In Europe, these things are equipped like houses. Phones, TVs, refrigerators, everything. Even in the US, internet, Wifi and DVD player are standard. The Germans like to make stuff complex.

Besides, even if I wanted to fake it, my Photoshop skills are nonexistent. I don't even have the program.
