hey guys get me through this please

Post by trentreed »

i have a 2008 Silverado 5.3l blah blah blah

The engine seems to run at about 220 degrees so i figure the thermosat is a 220 model

Im wanting to change to like a 160 thermostat to keep it cooler although it has never overheated

a few questions

#1 what temp does the stock thermostat fans lick on?

#2 if i did go with say the 160 degree what would be the proper fan selection from within the programmer?

If i new the answer to number 1 the rest would probably be self explanatory its unfortunate that we cant view this type of data with our programmers.

If you guys are even a little unsure. Im open to any suggestions to try and figure this out
and finally

#3 is there some reason i should not do this mod Im really surprised i couldn't find any info about it on these forums

The research I started (not complete) suggest that its ok to do this as long as the proper settings are set

Im running the Diablo tune in California :P

what settings do i need to set

IMO a 160 is too cold and never closes, but its up to you.

The fans are optimized for the stock t-stat, and you should see slight improvement in coolant temp from just loading the tune.

Thanks

1. They come on late, but these are not on/off fans, they are variable speed/power fans.

2. Best bet is to increase the duty cycles by a good percent to allow for quicker cool down.

yeah? increase the duty cycle?
i was thinking along these lines example
if it was at 220 and is going to be 180 wouldn't it be safest to turn it down 40 degrees? and if so that's why Im asking what temp they start at so i can adjust accordingly.

any input examples would be helpful too.

i would like to able to sleep at night at least knowing i didn't do anything to drastic. it never came close to overheating but sometimes when the air conditoning was on the fans were on super fast.

this is why Im looking for the specifics. can this info be pulled from the tuner somehow? Im not trying to change the world just want to know what to scale it to.

any suggestions how i can get that info would be great
thanks

Thats not the way GM fans work. You can't set a temperature. The engineers had to go and make things complicated.
