rough idle-footprint

Post by JACL »

I am new to this and see that one of my problems has been talked about here, so I will just lay it out the best I can. I noticed after installing the tune (prformance) in my 2006 Dodge diesel, my idle became rough and irregular. This was a little annoying but I could live with it and did.....I installed this in Jan. of 2007 and have been very pleased up to now....In November I re-installed the original backup because I did not need any extra power on our icy roads here in East. Washington. The idle was still rough but oh well. Last week my check engine light came on for the first time since I have owned my truck (32,000 miles). I dropped it off at my dealer to have him find out what the problem was. Remember, the predator programmer said original back-up was installed and there were no codes to read.) He told me the code was "excessive fuel rail pressure". He said he reset everything and the light will be off. He also asked if I had some sort of an aftermarket performance enhancer on my truck because his scanner detected one!!! What is up with this?! My main reason for purchasing this unit was the claim it was not detectable if you had to return your vehicle to dealer for warranty work. So I would like to know what is going on with this. The dealer also informed me the reason for the fluttering idle. He says the programmer changes the demand for fuel, timing etc. With a higher demand for fuel it puts more pressure on some check valve (a spring and a ball) The spring loses some of its memory and does not apply enough pressure to close the valve completely. This is what he says causes the idle flutter and other than burning a bit more fuel while sitting and idling, should not be a problem. I drove my truck for less than a day and the check engine light has come back on. I do not know for certain but suspect it will be the same code as before. I checked it with the programmer and once again it says there are no codes to read.....Why the codes all of a sudden? I have not changed my driving habits, and am actually very conservative with the way I drive. One nice day in June I was curious as to how much power I did have and romped on it from a standstill stop.....WOW!!!!(Not going to get maximum mileage out of that set of tires!) But that was one time seven months ago. My problems with the codes just started 6 days ago. I am very concerned about the detection of the predator by my dealer, and would like to know if there is a fix for this. I do not like the feeling of not having warranty coverage should I have a warranty issue. Thanks to anyone who might have some insight on this.

I never had the rough idle but I can tell you that the Predator for the 06s and 07s do not read the codes even though that option is there on the product. Kind of sucks!! It will clear the codes though. Do the key trick to have the codes displayed on the odometer. With the truck not running, turn the key on and off three times until you see dashes straight across the odometer. If you wait a couple seconds it will list any current codes. They will start with a P and then 4 numbers. If there are none, then it will say "done". Let us know what codes you are getting now. You should not get a high rail pressure code if you are running stock.....

The code was P0148. I did as you said and it brought up the code, then it said done, and now the light is out. Thank you. Now what about detection of the predator with the dealer's scanner? And why would you think I am getting these codes all of the sudden and out of the blue? Thanks for your help.

i think the only way the dealer star scan can detect it is with key counts, when u reflash the stock tune it erases the key counts, i think that also can be done by disconecting your batteries, but im not sure. As for reading codes my predator sems to read them fine

The key counts would be the only thing a dealer would have as an argument that you had some sort of programmer on there. Then again it is just an argument, not proof.
I could possibly be a bad/leaking injector which is quite common on the cummins.

I admit I am ignorant to much of the technical things you speak of here. What are the "key counts"? My dealer is fairly cool with programers, he installs them for people. This particular truck had an EDGE on it when I bought it from him. I disconnected it and installed the predator. Is there any chance that when I rewrote the factory tune back into my truck, that it did not do something completely and left its identity in there? Would it do me any good to re-install the performance tune and then uninstall it again just in case? Sorry I do not know much about these things I am glad there is this forum with so many people who can help. Thank you.

the ecu in the truck counts how many times the key has been cycled, if u take it to them after a reflash its only going to show a few cycles, where as there should be a few hundred depending on how much u start your truck

You would think when you do a backup of your factory tune it would also record the key counts. Then once you load the Predator on it wipes the key counts. But then you would think once you reload your original factory tune it could possibly restore the old key counts.

No your right I switched from the Triple Dog back to the Predator, the Predator has better power, I always did run the puc though, I'm still procrastinating about getting my FASS 150 installed, there it sits in the garage still....that TST is screaming for more fuel. As long as I keep it turned down the fuel problem isn't that bad.....the Triple Dog has more/better options then the Predator, but if you like the power, the Predator is the way to go.

Warranty Fears!

Post by akdiesel »

I also have warranty fears when I bring my truck in for my oil change. When I purchased the truck,(2006 5.9) I Purchased the life time oil change with it, so I always turn it back to stock the day I bring it in. From what you guys are saying should I turn it back to stock a few days before I get my oil change, so the key count is up ? Or am I not understanding this right.

Yeah you are better off doing that, i highly doubt they will check the key count at an oil change but better to be safe than sorry.
We should have a new release next week sometime that will never reset the key counts and allow you to adjust speed limiter.

Actually it won't help any. Right now, everytime you change tunes the key counts are wiped out. Even if you switch tunes a few days prior to going to the dealer, if they checked the keycounts which they won't unless you are having problems, they may find 15 or 20 keycounts which is fine if you only have 500 miles on your truck but if you have 30,000 like I do that tells them that someone has been messing with their truck. They won't do this if you are in there for an oil change. You have to be having major problems in order for them to go to these lengths.
Now, what would be super cool, Johan, would be if you could actually plant a certain number of keycounts in the computer for those of us who have higher mileage trucks and have had them wiped out many times. I know that's a lot to ask though.....
