66ref trans swap

Post by some0ne49 »

I have a 2013 Durango R/T that I love....except for the 65 REF transmission ratios. Searching the web I came across the 66 REF which has ratios I like much more and is said to be heavier duty. The two transmissions seem to have the same case and would interchange except for the software. I was hoping that I could use the Trinity tuner to custom tune for this trans or that Diablosport had a tune for the swap. Any info about this swap would be very much appreciated.

I dont believe it will be that easy, better option is to get a pcm from a truck that had the same engine and trans that you plan to use...

Sounds like most of what you're trying to accomplish needs to be done in the TCM not PCM but I'm not an expert.
With that being said, one of the problems with the 2011+ cars/trucks is the TCM is obfuscated and that makes it very difficult to reverse engineer.
So far, DiabloSport has no control of the TCM in 2011+ cars/trucks.

Probably best to try Mike's suggestion.

Can this be done with the 8 speed tranny? You swap out the PCM and TCM from the 6 speed and put in the 8 speed PCM and TCM?

6 speed does not use a TCM, all in the PCM.
8 speed has a TCM, so ideally you would need an 8 speed PCM and an 8 speed trans with the built in TCM to do that.

If i understand the 2013 Durango has only a pcm that controls the trans and engine and if I change to the 66 rfe and a pcm for that trans with a 5.7 like mine (like a 2500 with a 5.7) the pcm would handle the trans. I could tell my T1000 it was tuning a 2013 2500 instead of the Durango and tune my new engine / trans. combo that way. Does the pcm control chassis and cab features that might cause me problems.

My problem with the 65 rfe is the very tall 1st and 2nd gear. The 66 rfe gear spacing is much more even. Plus it has a slightly taller final OD for better MPG. My Durango shifts out of 2nd at about 80 mph and then has 4 more gears. What a waste.

Ratios:
65RFE
1st 3.00:1
2nd 1.67:1
3rd 1.50:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.75:1
6th 0.67:1
Reverse 3.00:1
66RFE
1st 3.231:1
2nd 1.837:1
3rd 1.410:1
4th 1.000:1
5th 0.816:1
6th 0.625:1
Reverse 4.444:1
