more tunin'

Post by shrecewa »

I made some adjustments... started with the performance tune.
I've got my injector slope @ -10%; p/e @ -8% for both; and spark cal @ -14% for all three. I kept adjusting the spark cal down...by 2 or 3 until I didn't hear any knocking... my log shows a little KR...may be from downshifting?? I am a little unclear on interpreting the data.

Any recommendations, slickRed?? Thanks again for your last post. If it weren't for guys like you and Lew, I'd be lost with all this stuff. You folks really know your stuff!

i wouldnt worry about it right at the downshift, you are more concerned with it while you are at WOT for the entire pull. are you saying also that you leaned it out -8%.... i hope if you did this you were monitoring AFR at WOT. that will determine what you need to set your PE fuel settings to.

I did exactly that. I may have to make a few more fine adjustments. It was a little funny because I was driving up and down a certain portion of a highway...making WOT runs, doing real time monitoring of those few parameters by logging on the tool. After the run, I pulled off a side road and reviewed the log, made any adjustments to the tune, flashed the PCM and did it again. It seems that I had a lot of loud pre-ignition....and looking at the log I posted compared to what you said about where I need the timing ~20%... I can bump it back up, towards 20. Am I reading the log correcly? The AFR may need to go to -9...to get it into band a little more...

whatever adjustment you need to get AFR around 12.6-12.8 at WOT, thats the adjustment you need to make. that is adjusted with PE fueling, then your total spark at WOT is under PE spark. i run around 25-26* at WOT...but i have a cammed/header/no cat setup so i can did that. 8) normally with good 93 gas and a stock motor, you can run around 23-24* at WOT.

what really funny is when i was trying to tune mine for the spray, i had my brother riding with, monitoring the AFR for me, and i would make a full throttle run on the interstate from 50-90mph with the spray on..... the first 2 times i did it, he forgot what the AFR was cause he was so excited by it.  i said " focus asshole, this is important"

its a good way to get a ticket, while you are tuning these things.

" "modify parameters"...you will see PE spark. adjust your tables starting at about +4%....install "modified tune"...then check for KR at WOT again..." :?

Isn't the PE, or Power Enrichment, setting for the amount of fuel under hard acceleration like an accelerator pump? I have personal interest in this topic because I am still having KR. I am running 89 (Sunoco) on the 87 performance tune with about -10% timing. I have bumped the PE up 2% thinking that more fuel would help but still get KR. I notice it and hear it especially when my truck is in OD and I accelerate. I have thought my next step is a new fuel filter, but my LTFT's indicate that my fuel is right on. I am at wits end with this. One of the other things I was thinking is that possibly from flashing and re-flashing multiple times my cpu my base timing has been corrupt.

How much KR can a person have? Should I try to run the most spark advance without audible knocking? When the truck shifts---letting off the pedal or stomping on the pedal--- and I see ANY TKSR, is that a problem? In other words, what is acceptable (don't want to cause any damage)?

Thanks man, appreciate the support.

when you first mash the pedal, you'll get tip-in KR -- normal.

on decel from WOT, you'll get some KR -- normal.

but during the the WOT itself, you don't want any... although, I see blips of 0.xxx on mine, but don't worry about that miniscule amount... it doesn't even pull any timing for that...

but you don't want any KR of 2 or higher...

I'll do some more monitoring... thanks for the info. You fellows are great to help us 'tune' our vehicles... has your payback from Diablo kicked in, yet?

Lew, I was re-reading your sticky on adjustments/logging....and from what I understand, I would want to make adjustements to my LTFT's based on the lowest reading? For example, if my two banks are reading +9 and +7...then I want to adjust the inj slope to a -8 ?? Likewise, if my two banks were reading -5.64 and -7.24....I'd adjust the inj slope to a +7 ??

you'd wanna do -8%, or +6%

So it is the smaller of the two....or the less negative of them.... or is it the average of them?

whichever...

you want to adjust so that the lowest you'll be is at -1 or -2... and the other one will then be -1, 0, +1, or +2 or whatever..

as long as neither of them is lower than -2... you don't want to adjust it so one is at -2 and the other is at -4...

get it? make sense?
