High elevation tune?

Post by nmstang »

I have a 2007 4.0 v6 Mustang and I have purchased the U7145 tuner. We have recently added a MAC Performance CAI with a 83.5mm venturi and ceramic coated headers with a stainless catback dual exhaust. We live at 7000' elevation and we wanted to start with one of the preloaded performance tunes. Our gas here is only 90 to 91 octane so I realize we may have to adjust the tune a little. I have an automotive engineer to help with the process but we would appreciate any help to find the right tune to start with. Thanks.

nmstang, If you only have access to 90 or 91 octane fuel where you are located. You can go into the global spark table and remove 2-3 degrees of timing. Remove 1 degree of timing for every 1 point in octane you drop down.

I guess you are talking about installing the 93 octane tune and backing the timing off from there or is there a better tune to start with based on the modifications we have made? Thank you.

Yeah, start with the 93 tune and back off 1 degree per octane (i.e. if you're going to run 91, back off 2*).

I'm in Denver (5,280) and I have been using the 93 performance tune on my 06 GT with the 91 fuel and it's been great. No problems at all.

FYI, it's a CL7140 performance tune, not the U7140. I don't know if that would matter.

RedStang06, Thanks for the info. I have the U7145 and we are going to put the 93 tune in tomorrow. Finally got the hangers for the second muffler from ford today. So all the parts are in place and ready for the fun of checking out what the diablo tuner can do. Will keep you posted.

Update: I am posting this info to hopefully help anyone at a higher altitude. We worked on the car at about 4800' elevation and it was ready to bring home yesterday. We put the 93octane performance tune in the car and started up the mountain. I got a check engine light and we hooked up the tuner and it was a lean code on both banks. Since we were only at about 5500' we reset the code and started up the mountain. Every thing was fine until we let the car sit for an hour or so and we got the code again just cruising around town. We installed a couple of the other tunes available and they were too rich(got the wrench on the dash! Limp home mode!) We installed the Steeda 91 octane tune and have had no codes yet. I will drive it this weekend and test this tune.
A question for RedStang06? Did you have any difficulty with the shift in the 93 tune? When I first drove the car the shifts were really strange. It would shift and then flatten out for a moment before it would catch and take off. After I drove the car for 30 minutes or so it seemed to smooth out a little. We are going to decide on Monday which tune to start with. I seemed to have more power with the 93 tune but the car runs smoother with the steeda tune. Will keep you posted!

Just a note: The Mac performance headers and stainless duals sound great on the V6!!!
