How does 87 performance tune add power?

Post by gone_fishing »

Hello everyone. I just purchased the i2030 for my 2014 Sierra 5.3 6 speed. I did the 87 octane flex tune along with the firm shift TCM tune. I read that the 87 octane tune doesn't modify the timing tables. If these are left alone, how is more power made?

Thanks!

Power is made by raising limits, optimizing AFR, and some other changes.

Can you be a little more detailed? If its not modifying the timing why am I pinging on the 87 tune when I wasn't before? Too lean?

Make sure you select/install tunes from the Tune Vehicle - ADVANCED MODE menu.. there was a bug in the Easy Mode menu, where if you selected the 87 octane tune, the tool actually installed the 91/93 octane tune, which obviously has higher timing settings and is not meant for just 87 octane gas.. so use the Advanced Mode menu..

use good 89 octane gas.. Make sure you are using GOOD 91/93 octane gas, it makes a difference... mobil, exxon, sunoco, amoco, bp, chevron are best brands to use, with mobil and exxon being the best..

NEVER use Shell, costco/bj's, mom-n-pop, or no-name brands, as it's crap gas that tends to cause a lot of knock retard and less performance/mpg...

I was going through advanced already to make sure I turned off DoD. It was your post that made me try and figure out what my last two tanks of gas were, so thanks for that too. What I'm trying to make sense of is:

"bad" gas + stock tune = no ping
"bad" gas + 87 tune = ping

If there was no change to spark, something else in the tune is causing this. If I can find that and adjust it I'd feel a lot better about the situation going forward.

it may be a little lean, try adding a little fuel at WOT to quench the knock.

At what % throttle is the 87 tune switching to the PE WOT tables?

Anybody?

50% @ 0 seconds?

I thought I had read that stock it had to be like 90% throttle with a delay of 60 seconds. I'm guessing that gets changed in any tune, right?

PE delay is removed, but theres more to it on the new trucks, like max throttle angle vs rpm, where the pcm doesnt allow the throttle to fully open no matter what you do with your right foot, we raise those and allow for full throttle right away, etc.

The big things that get changed is spark timing gets increased and Performance Enrichment A/F gets leaned up. Yes, this even happens on the 87 octane tunes by all tuner manufacturers. Yes, you will probably end up seeing more pinging because the timing gets increased. If you want to get rid of it, you need a custom tune to decrease timing in the cells where you're seeing the pinging.

Custom tuning can be done via http://www.diablewtune.com

and no, timing is NOT increased at WOT or part-throttle cruising areas on the 87 octane tune...

the issue comes with being on an old intune revision update, there was a bug in the Easy Mode menu, where if you selected the 87 octane tune, it would install the Diablo Tune - which is the 91/93 octane tune, that DOES have higher timing settings.. so you needed to actually select/install tunes from the Advanced Mode menu..

but, that bug has been fixed in recent updates..

so restore original backup stock tune to your vehicle..

then make sure your inTune is fully up to date to the latest revision updates...

then reinstall the preset tunes..

Well then the bug hasn't been fixed in the newer updates because I had my tuner guy take a look using an i1000 this past summer with the latest update installed on a 2002 Suburban 5.3 and using an i2030 on a 2002 Escalade 6.0 and a 2002 K2500 6.0L. All 3 increased the spark timing across basically the entire RPM range by 1 degree on over 0.64ish gm/cyl on the 87 octane tune. I also had him look at a Hypertech and Superchips tune on the 2002 K2500 6.0L. The Hypertech increased the timing by 2 degrees across the entire board. I do have to correct myself on my original post though, the Superchips did not change the timing.

Some of the early class2 stuff may have timing added on the 87 tunes, but its not common on the newer stuff.
