2013 Explorer Sport

Hi Guys,

I've got an i3 Platinum that i use for getting custom tunes onto my GMC Sierra's and i recently picked up a used explorer sport, I'm thinking of buying a ford license for my i3 and just using one of the canned tunes on it for now as a quick cheap upgrade. I'm having a hard time finding really any user feedback on diablosport tuned explorer sports, really i think I've seen maybe 3 posts total after a lot of searching. They do all pretty much say "it's great" but no further details. Being a bit older I don;t see the 'news relaese' type of post on the diablosport page that the more recent vehicles do with the specific features and dyno sheets etc. I know it's pretty unlikely that many people who've tuned up the wife's 'mommy missile' have taken it to a dyno or the track, but can anyone give me a bit of specific feedback on what they like and don't about the canned diablosport tunes for the explorer sport?

well, I can tell you it adds 60-70 AWHP to the Explorer Sports

wow, that's a lot of ponies, is that peak or down in the "usable on roads" range? seems almost silly not to at least try it, especially for just the price of a license.

it adds like 50+ ft/lbs across the board, even more at peak.

Well, I went for it, grabbed a ford license for my i3, loaded up the 87 octane tune (using advanced mode, but making no changes) , started the engine and... it stuttered and stalled. I started it again, it ran for about 8 seconds then stalled. I then reapplied the tune (using easy mode this time still no other changes), started, ran for 8-10 seconds then stalled, so a little panic'd i reloaded the backup. started the engine and everything was back to normal, went for a 15 minute drive to make sure. Since everything was fine, i tried loading the tune again, started the engine, and let it idle for about 30 seconds, seemed good so i popped it in gear, drove about 15ft and it stalled again. Restored the backup again and back to normal once more, any ideas on this?

Just tried again and I get the same result, engine starts then stalls, no changes to the 87octane tune. Attached are my lasttunewritten file with the 87octane tune installed and backup. since my reading on here suggests you'll ask for them.

Well, so far after a week working with support, I have yet to get a working tune. and my latest update is, "hopefully we have something for you this week". I bought this after making sure my completely stock vehicle was listed as supported etc. I'm not sure how it can be so far off from other stock vehicles that it won't even run with the canned 87 the tune installed. I've been provided one test file (very quickly, within about an hour of reporting my issue) which let me idle for about twice as long as the canned tune (still under a minute) before it was ready to stall, but that was pretty much the end of any troubleshooting I've seen so far.

My plan of "buy license", "update i3", "goto car and apply tune" which i figured in total would take about 40 minutes, is now at a week, with the possibility of having some sort of next step, maybe sometime within another week.

The front end support staff are great, I just wish I didn't have to deal with them every time I shell out some money. When i first bought the i3 (from the diablosport website, shipped right from powerteq) it was missing the 'updater' app which apparently was not remotely fixable and totally prevented me from using it on the 2017 Sierra i bought it for. No Problem,stuff happens, they shipped me a new one after identifying the issue and I was able to tune my truck with the files provided by my tuner about two weeks after making the initial purchase. Now this time, buy a license to use on a bone stock vehicle with the plan of just using the canned tune. Mine is the first of 4 years of that vehicle listed as supported and the tune is so far off that the engine won't even run more than a few seconds. I'm sure this will be sorted eventually but the delays and uncertainty have very much soured my experience. At this point I couldn't recommend this to anyone I actually liked.

Thanks for looking into this Mike, I just tried it and get pretty much the same result as the original canned tune, tune loads fine, start the vehicle, and it stalls after a couple seconds. So far the 2nd file (first test one) i was sent ran for the longest. I've attached ltw and backup after loading the one you just attached here. If there's any logging or anything i can do to help identify the issue I'm absolutely willing.

I'm gonna ask our ford team to look into this again, not sure whats happening here.

can you use the device to load the tune called modify stock and let me know if it behaves there?

i just used the modify stock tune with no changes to it and it loaded and runs normally. LTW and backup attached for that.

Please let me know if there's anything else i can do on my end to help move this along.

Also, I tried filling with 91 and loading the 91 tune and got the same results (stalls in under a minute of idling). Have also pulled checked (not very dirty) and cleaned the map sensor and the other two air sensors, just in case. Checked the plugs, oem plugs look good and gapped consistently to .032

Starts and runs now, I let it idle for about 3minutes then did a very tame coffee run, don't think I exceeded 3k rpm, but we're definitely heading in the right direction. What are he next steps?
