Spark Advance???

Post by mooshnicka »

Can anyone elaborate on timing advance briefly? Is 40 deg. to high at 65 mph? What are safe timing ranges for optimal performance ?

Thanks!

45 degrees would be your cruise timing, which is not that super important, and will fluctuate....

we like to focus on your WOT (wide open throttle) timing.... you should see any where from 20-26 degrees at WOT, depending upon how much advance you are running, what supporting mods you have, etc.

monitor your real time data on your vehicle while driving, and watch the spark readaout from a cruise....then punch it... you will see it drop substantially....... some cars run around 23-24* at WOT stock, and most trucks are around 20* stock at WOT

I've got my LTFT's dialed in and seem to be working really well. I played with Spark advance last night and advanced it 2. It felt like a negitive effect on performance. Do I want to advance or retard and was 2 enough or should I have gone more. But I assure you it was worse performance than before. I put it back to the normal setting, and performance came back. I made all 3 settings +2 to see what effects it would have. Also monitored the knock, and was NOT getting any.

Any ideas?
Steven

if you went + 2%, then you didnt advance very much at all... your timing will always reach a point where it isnt beneficial to add , it just cant make any more power..

what is your total timing at WOT, just curious?

i run about 26* in mine, any more just didnt amount to more power... it reached that happy point at 26*.

I'll have to check, I don't know....

Btw, I killed an SS camero yesterday on a two lane country road. I had to keep letting off the gas
