HUGE backfire and stalling on 5.7 charger

Post by Weston »

I installed the 91 cia tune and raise the redline, and it feels really nice. But when I get to redline it tries to upshift then loses all power, then when you slow down it stalls. I have an auto so it has a big delay on when I decide to shift it too, so I can’t test to see if shifting sooner fixes it. The first time it happened a massive backfire shot and it sounded like a cannon, but it sounded clean. It didn’t sound crispy or crunchy just loud asl bang. I will lower the redline to 6k rather than the 6.4k I raised it to, but I haven’t been able to test if it is still a bomb. That blows though because I have a Holley midram intake so my power band has been raised to end near 6.5 k so I would like to keep it as high as possible if it’s not actively making my engine a 5.7 liter bomb.

When it loses power it seems like an electronic safety switch got flipped but idk.

Id recommend looking into a custom tune for optimal performance with that intake.

Hi, thanks so much. I assumed I would need one and got the i3 to get one later, but I was hoping I could put one of the of the shelf tubes on it and enjoy that while I save for a custom one. Would one of the other tunes on the i3 platinum be better, or is there other parameters on it that might make it not stall.

I do plan on a custom tune, but I can’t right now and don’t want to be scared of my car before I do.

hard to say without a log to know what its doing and what it needs.

Id suggest not going WOT until you have a tune for the setup.

Ok, will do. I’ll get a log and send it here and a tuner. I was thinking hemifever, I’ve heard good and I think it’s a good price. Would you suggest them or is there a better option for a similar or less price?

And for the log, is there anything I need to do to get a useful log. I’ll start logging cold and let it warm up then drive it around through the gears and rpm range. Anything else you’d suggest?

log it doing the things it shouldn't do ;)

Hemifever is a great choice.

I tried to adjust the tune a little before running the data logging and my i3 wouldn’t turn on. I tried unplugging and replying it in then turning the key to on . I also drove my car around to make sure I had enough battery and it still didn’t work. I tried to go through returns to get a replacement, but nothing is happening, can you help me?

if it doesn't power up, chances are its a blown fuse in the car.
does it power up in a different vehicle?

I checked all of my fuses and they are good. I haven’t tried it in another car, but my code reader still works perfectly. It’s just the i3 that doesn’t work. Does the other car I use to check have to be a charger or just a car with a working obd2 port?

any vehicle with an OBDII port.
Does your i3 have the cable that unplugs at the bottom or its permanently connected?

It turned on with another car. What fuse or fuses should I change?
