My fuel economy has gone DOWN with every update!!

Post by Powerstrokin250 »

I bought a Predator when I bought my 2005 F250 new in Dec '04. I dont know what it was programmed for when I bought it, but my mileage on my digital display on the instrument panel ranged from 13.1 to 13.4 mpg. A few months later I updated the programmer to U7165_pcm_6_0-8r10 and immediately noticed my economy drop to around 12.3 - 12.5 (depending upon hwy or town driving). Of course, you can't go back to a prior program, so I was hoping that a future update would restore my lost fuel economy. Several months later I updated again to U7165_pcm_6_0-8r13 and AGAIN my mileage went down immediately. This time to high 11's. Keeping with the hope that at some point an update would restore my lost economy, I updated a couple months ago to U7165...9r03. NOW my mileage is 11.0!!! I have even seen it go down to 10.8 around town driving... WTF!!!

I only keep the setting to the middle performance setting and I do not abuse my truck. I bought it brand new in Dec '04 and it now has 27,800 miles. It has always been serviced. However, EVERY time I update my programmer and truck my fuel economy goes down. WHAT IS GOING ON and how do I recover 2.5 mpg I have lost??

It is not recommended to go off the digital display as they're are normally incorrect and can sometimes vary especially after programming.

I also check my mileage the old-fashioned way and it's 10.8 mpg. It's simply baffling as to why my mileage has decreased each time I update. I haven't noticed any appreciable difference in performance with each update, just a contemporaneous loss is fuel economy commensurate with each update :?

From what I have learned, ALL programmers, chips, etc. have a negative affect on the accuracy of the Digital Display (Lie-O-Meter LOM). Try hand calculating over a period of a few tanks to get a more accurate idea of your mileage.

You could also try reinstalling the stock tune to get a new baseline. Maybe something other than the programmer is affecting your mileage. I had a plugged EBP sensor (threw a code but no CES). Milage improved after replacement.

What is an EBP sensor and is it easily replaced? (I am recently out of warranty and taking my truck to the dealer is a real PITA!)

I found one on ebay for about half of ford's price. You will see a code if yours is goofy.

We must have seen the same one, because I found one for $69 (havent bought it yet). However, I did replace my fuel filters which were past due for replacement. Unfortunately, no change.

I called the dealer about checking the EBP sensor, but they say they can't take me until next week at the earliest  . Considering it will cost me at least $69 for a diagnostic (not to mention my time and aggravation) I figure I may as well just go ahead and replace the sensor. However, I don't have a shop manual and I dont know where the EBP sensor goes. A head's up on where it goes and if it's just a simple unplug, unscrew and replace? Once I replace it, I will check back in and advise if it made any difference.

Do a google for "guzzle". He has a great write-up, with pictures, to clean the EBP tube and sensor. Caveat: The pictures are a 7.3 PSD; principle should be the same.

Thanks for the info. I found the site:

Hopefully, I can find the sensor on my 6.0L truck and get it cleaned out. My economy dropped another 10th of an mph today, so I really hope to find a clogged tube and bad sensor. I changed out both fuel filters (which were getting funky) and that didnt help improve the economy. I'm putting my chips on the EBP sensor and looking for a big payoff!

Well I looked at the site about cleaning the EBP tube and sensor on the 7.3L, but I'll be damned if I can find it on my 6.0 :? . Where exactly is this thing on the 6.0 liter engine??
