2005 Magnum - LOTS of pinging at WOT
I just had to modify the sample subject line! LOL!
I just got my predator today and installed the 91 CAI tune... It was awsome for about a half an hour and then the car started to knock BAD at 3.5k rpm at almost any throttle position or any gear... I loved everything else about it but installed the stock tune again. I am using 92 octane. I did a log of the knock and during a very short span, the ST KN shot up to 9-10 and the LT went to 3-6 at the same time, after I slowed it down they both went back to 0.00. This was from 3.5k rpm to 4.5k rpm... What else do I need to log to see what the problem is? Also, it did it some times and other times it didn't... I would drive 10 miles and it wouldn't do it, drive another 10 and it comes back... I have a 180* thermostat and Frankentake. I *think* that the knock happened when the motor was a little on the warm side... Ambient temp was 78.

Oh yeah, and is a U0101 code normal for everytime I change the shift firmness? Only time it happens...
RE: 2005 Magnum - LOTS of pinging at WOT
What else do you have done to the car and what brand fuel where you using?
The U0101 is a chassis code and might be there because you recently flashed the vehicle, it should not trigger the cel however.

RE: 2005 Magnum - LOTS of pinging at WOT
I have a 180 thermostat and custom intake... I use Costco gas which has been good to me in the past, especailly in my 2001 Audi A4 1.8t. I have a very extreme 93 octane tune in my Audi and don't get any knock at all at 22 psi running 92 octane Costco gas... I almost don't think it is the gas but weirder things have happened I guess... Reason I don't think it is the gas is because when I go to the stock tune, I get 0.00 ST KR and 0.00 LT KR... Plus it happens at all throttle ranges only above 3.5k rpm. I will reload the tune. Should I just leave the tune in for a day or two and just take it easy?
Another thing, when I installed the tune, the car was warm and I usually prefer to install them while cold so the ECU can adapt to a full run cycle... The first 5 miles of having the tune installed, it was sluggish and seemed worse than the OEM tune... But that cleared up and was good for a while, until the pinging started...

RE: 2005 Magnum - LOTS of pinging at WOT
One more noob question... When I raise the shift point, do I have to raise the rev liimiter or is that already taken care of when I install the 91 CAI tune? I just want to raise it to 6k...
RE: 2005 Magnum - LOTS of pinging at WOT
Ok, I don't know anything about the 2005 motors. It's a 5.7L? On the SRT8s I believe the PCM will only compensate for up to 9* of knock (retard). If you're hearing it ping you're probably going over that. Pinging is really bad and you can do major damage in a split second. I wouldn't "experiment" with the ping anymore until you know what's going on. You need to look at timing and your a/f. Maybe a trip to a reputable dyno shop. One where the operator will know enough to shut it down if he doesn't like what he sees.

Well, I reinstalled the 91 CAI tune today and was getting ST KR 3-5 which makes me happy... There was one that shot to 9 real quick and then back down but I did not hear any knock... At that moment, the AFR was 13.8. I do have one more question though... When I was logging, I was looking at I think it was Spark Advance and Throttle position...
Spark advance read 126 or 0 on the tool but a max of 16 in the Data Viewer... ???
Throttle position read 0 across the board, even under part throttle or WOT... I know this car has the ability to read throttle position...

How are you getting AFR? Do you have a wideband?

I was getting them from the "o2 readings" while logging... I know they probably aren't the most accurate since it is a narrowband but I am sure it is "close enough."

COSTCO gas is your issue, i actually had a bone stock 02 camaro in here once and it rattled soo bad on the stock tune we had to go drain the tank and put some mobil in it.
There is a reason their fuel is cheaper.

Albertson's Grocery Store gas is not good either. Stick with Mobil, Sunoco, BP or ARCO gas.

RE: Re: RE: 2005 Magnum - LOTS of pinging at WOT
what about Race Trak gas stations, and does the ethanol in the fuel not effect the tune in any way?
RE: Re: RE: 2005 Magnum - LOTS of pinging at WOT
Race Trak is no good either. I use Shell, BP, or Sunoco as in my area Exxon has gone to the very fine print 10% ethonal mix.
Yes, 10% ethanol does affect the tune! It can be ran in stock calibrations safely because the OEM calibrations are much richer.

Yeah, the DS guys don't like that "Oxygenized" fuel, namely Ethanol.
