Which tuner is right for me?
Which tuner is right for me?
I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2WD, ECSB, and 5.3L engine. I use the truck as a daily driver, but I also tow a 20’ enclosed trailer (about 6000lbs) a couple times a month. I have Magnaflow high flow converters (complete Y-pipe), Magnaflow 3â€

The Predator will allow you to dial in the tune for your combo, its not a 'one tune fits all' type of tool.
A U7198 will do anything you need for your truck.
Thanks

RE: Which tuner is right for me?
You can easily dial in your fuel and timing settings for mods if needed. The neat thing about the Predator is that will datalog how the truck is performing and you can analyze the results with DSlogRedux to give you adjustment recommendations.
Keep in mind that you will need the U7198 Predator with a 9Rxx software revision to do datalogging. Older revision (2.13) will not support datalogging and pc interface, only datamonitoring (you have to watch the screen while you drive). you will also need a PC interface kit to hookup the Predator to your PC for datalogging analysis. The PC kit is a separate item. You can buy them when you buy the Predator or you can buy them locally at places like radioshack.

Thanks for the replies.
What about torque management? Can the Diablo turn it off and will this get rid of the off-the-line lag? Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I'm reading, the Diablo can do everything a custom tune can do. I just do it myself. Is this correct?

Not 'everything' a custom tune can do, but quite a bit, and way more than any other handheld.
The Predator will allow you to fully disable TM, but the big gains will come from the removal of the PE delay at WOT in our tunes.
Thanks

RE: Which tuner is right for me?
What thermostat would you recommend for my application and what is PE delay? Will going to a cooler thermostat reduce engine life? Why does turning off the torque management not help that much? I have not used a tuner before so I am new to this. Thanks

PE is power enrichment and i belive Lew has a stickey about this in the fuel trimming section at the top of this forum. On your model that PE delay is the biggest issue so thats why you gain more off of that. TM is a big problem in other vehicles so we turn those down or off. GM had got there own e-nanies babysitting your truck so you dont blow it up but they dont need to be so high or take away so much, this is why we want tuners. To realease the power hidden inside our cars/trucks pcm's .

I just read "How GM fuel injection works" as a refresher. I actually understand fuel injection pretty well. I just did not know what the "PE" stood for. Now it is all making sense. As for the e-nannies, I'd rather my right foot do the babysitting!
I would like to know what is the best temperature thermostat to run for power without sacrificing too much engine life.
Thanks for all the replies

The newer ones are controlled so much by computers, that most likely if you go too low and never hit closed loop operation, it may never run right. It would probably keep your truck constantly pig-rich. If it were me I would not go below a 180 degree.

keep the stock thermostat. there is no reason or gains from changing this out. your truck will run/operate best at 200-205*Fjackd wrote:Thanks
