Not wanting to argue, you guys are the experts, but it sure makes sense that if you are having problems with them playing nice or if you are having problems with the hardware dealing with all different models then spliting them up would make sense, I'm just a lowly computer tech but that's what makes sense to me.

Splitting them up is not going to speed anything up nor will it make retailers happy.
We will not wait for 09 support to release this part #.
But now how did SCT get the 06's to work with the 04 and 05s if the 06's and up are CAN based? I could have sworn the CAN based system didnt start till 07? Idk just tryin to learn

Marketing for separate products,
Production of separate products,
Manuals,
Brochures,
part numbers,
pricing,
maintaining separate release trains (huge),
support,
channel partner training,
distribution?

might be a some of the considerations? I'm not an expert either but I know it's not all just coding.

Market - yeah you might have to add a line or two to adds
Production - I'd guess that it's the same hardware but software would be different which is not a big deal - I deal with software all day long.
Manuals - don't see where that would be a problem, they all work the same, basicly, with different part numbers is all.
Brochures - different part numbers would be the only difference so I guess that would cost a bit more to have different #'s on add's.
Part numbers - don't see any problem there, they have different part numbers for other make/model cars.
Pricing - why would that be different?!
Seperate release trains - Yeah, they would have to deal with seperate tunners/software but they will have to deal with seperate vehicles on the same tuner, could be a bigger headache since they are having problems now just getting it to market!
Support - why would that be a problem, they do support all of their products.
Channel partner training - If I understand the tunners correctly they all do basicly the same thing so why would someone who knows how to deal with their other tunners need special training to deal with the two or three others?
Distribution - I really don't know why that would be a problem, sorry, that just doesn't make sense.

Not trying to be an ass or argumentative, just don't see the logic in your possible reasons is all...

[quote="HemiSilva"]Market - yeah you might have to add a line or two to adds

Somebody has to do that. It has to be proofed, approved, you have to track it, time it, etc. more than just adding a line of text.

Production - I'd guess that it's the same hardware but software would be different which is not a big deal - I deal with software all day long.

Maybe different source code. Different images with different function. Builds need to be verified separately. You have to make sure the correct image is loaded on the device when packaged, etc.

Manuals - don't see where that would be a problem, they all work the same, basicly, with different part numbers is all.

Somebody has to do that. It has to be proofed, sent to printer, proofed, then the cost of the bulk printing. Maybe it could be mitigated if a common manual was used.

Brochures - different part numbers would be the only difference so I guess that would cost a bit more to have different #'s on add's.

See above, same thing (I was just being dramatic)

Part numbers - don't see any problem there, they have different part numbers for other make/model cars.

Sure but there is going to be significant overhead with each part#. It has to be in the system throughout the office, front to back. Accounting, inventory, warranty, etc. all that could be sort of automatic but it isn't. You can't just add a part# in development and not tell anyone about it right?

Pricing - why would that be different?!

Most likely the same but every part has a price and there is a process to add it. Same as part number (just being dramatic again)

Seperate release trains - Yeah, they would have to deal with seperate tunners/software but they will have to deal with seperate vehicles on the same tuner, could be a bigger headache since they are having problems now just getting it to market!

This is really significant. Especially maintaining it. Development, fixes, builds, testing, production, it goes all the way through.

Support - why would that be a problem, they do support all of their products.

Much easier to support added function/features in a product than separate products. See most of the above. As noted, much will be the same. If you fix one product most likely you will need to port that fix to the other products. That may not be automatic if there is interaction/dependency on the different functionality. Then there is an interdependency between the products. If it's a critical fix does that force a maintenance release of all the other products and incur the associated overhead? It's usually multiple the work rather than incremental.

Channel partner training - If I understand the tunners correctly they all do basicly the same thing so why would someone who knows how to deal with their other tunners need special training to deal with the two or three others?

Everybody has to know what the differences are in the different products. How they're different and how they're the same. Lot of these places don't know how a tuner works. They need to know if someone has this car, of this year, then they need this part#. You need to provide them with that information and understanding.

Distribution - I really don't know why that would be a problem, sorry, that just doesn't make sense.

Probably same as the channel partner concerns. You need to worry about and track whether you have sent x number of these and y number of those. If Joe's autoparts says I want to sell Predators you need to send them what they need. Also more of a part# thing again. The vendor will incur all the overheads of having additional parts too.

Not trying to be an ass or argumentative, just don't see the logic in your possible reasons is all...

Not at all. I think most people don't have any idea of the overhead and stuff involved with a different product. It's not just Mike and team cranking out a bit of code and sending it to you. Maybe the above is collapsed a good bit for a very small operation/company but DiabloSport has a lot of products and probably has some of that in place.

LOL dang dude, I didn't mean to get your panties all in a wad! I still think you are over complicating things, if they have to it for one it's not that much more to do it for two more of ECENTIALLY the same part but with just slightly different software - you think too much, I short I guess we just disagree is all...

It is a bit different than a web or even a desktop app. To test a build we have to bring in many loaner cars to test upon. This takes time and money to arrange, as every loaner car has to be rewarded for letting us use their vehicle for a day.

actually, CAN based protocol, depending on the vehicle, started in vehicles from 05 and up...

and by 2008, all vehicles sold in the US will be required to implement CAN.

I'm not arguing. In fact I'll concede.
They've got it on the shelf for some of the cars and there's no pratical reason for them not to release what's ready. What's your theory as to why they're witholding it?

Only management can answer to what the short term development priorities are, and those change from month to month. The employees who browse these boards (the "you all" above) have been warned not to provide guess estimates.

Well then tell "management" to get their butt in here and give us a straight answer already... I'm sure ol' Daddy Warbucks can take a minute from counting his money to explain why he's been stringing us along for two years. Gen 4 is out now. Do we have to wait for that to be added also? Two years ago we were just waiting for the 07's to be tested. then it was "well we need to get the 08's inline." This is worse than a government program.

I was thinking the exact same thing, but didn't think it was appropriate to post. But since its been said..... Wheres management to deal with the people? Why can't they make up their minds about priorities? They're quick to "warn" about stuff but where are they to give a straight answer? Bunch of executive cowards it sounds like.

But with these trucks I dont think they moved to the CAN system till 07.
