6.0L gas, towing heavy weight

Post by Justardnck »

Is there a way I can tune the truck to get more power for towing? Currently I have the factory tune with just a tire size change. My trailer is heavy at 8Klbs empty and running 10K-12K loaded. My 6.0 hates this trailer, I have to run in tow mode and the truck struggles to hit 60mph even when the trailer is empty at 8Klbs

If your 10-12k loaded, the best thing to help tow that is a Duramax. My buddy has a toy hauler that is 8k loaded and its a load at that.

I agree but for the time being I need to make due with what I have. Duramax will be on my next option sheet though.

Best you can do is use the Diablotune, its for 91 octane fuel (or higher).

Follow this link to make some fine tune adjustment to make it as good as possible.

We have figured out the problem, I would have never thought the tire size would change my gear ration so much. I originated with 245/75/16 and a 4:10 ratio. I lifted the truck 6" and put 315/70/17 (35") on and I assumed my gear ration may have dropped to 3:73 but after doing the math it actually dropped my ratio to 3:42 which is why I struggle to tow the heavy trailer. I put the rims and tires from my work van on the truck (245s) and it towed the trailer very well. I know I need a gear change but everybody I talk to says I can make changes in the computer that will compensate for not changing the gears, is this possible? I know I can change shift points and such but do you think that will help?

Not sure if your model will adjust for tire size. Go into the tune you have installed, Modify Tune and, in mine its called Speed Calibration. Check with a GPS to see how much your speedo is off. If you are maintaining an indicated 60mph with the wrong tires size, your probably doing ok with speed. I'd bet your just about 70 by GPS.

Adjust tires then follow the link I gave you above to make your tune the best it can be.

The speedo is fine, it's the original reason I bought the Diablo. I already took care of the tire size change but people are telling m I need to change the shift points. Do you think that'll help?

I'd love to give you some advice on shift, but the model I had doesn't have TCM support.
