Car not starting - no odometer reading, can't restore tune

Post by Darkcrime »

1. Part #112442
2. Can't get to the main menu
3. 98 mustang gt, 01 mustang gt

I have had the predator tuner on my car for over 2 years (very nice christmas present from my wife I may add) (with a dyno tune and all). A friend of mine came over today in his 01 mustang gt and wanted to buy a predator but was unsure if it was worth it. I'm getting a new tune on Tuesday so I figured I would restore my to factory, put it on his car for a day, and he can see if he wants to buy one (he has a few mods and I told him to just buy one).

Here's where the issues started to happen. I "unmarried it" from my car, and put it on his. I married it to his car, and went to install a tune, and that's where my issues started. The predator will not install a tune, it says something like "make sure the car is on but not started" and it will not install the tune. It tells me to unplug it. I plug it back in, and all I can do is restore it to factory default with the options of "no, yes, and force".

No - makes me turn of the tuner.
yes - attempts to unmarry the tuner but I get the same issue "make sure the car is on but not started" then doesn't see it
force - needs me to have a password to do this.

Besides the fact that now I'm screwed because now I can't take this off his car and put it on mine, but now his car wont start and it will not show his odometer (it just shows ----------------). Is his pcm trashed now? If it is, ok, no problem, we'll get it towed (he gets free towing) and have them reflash it (his car has an extended warranty), (it sucks cause he's down a car for a few days) but am I screwed now? Again, i have a dyno tune on my car (just installed stage 2 cams) on Tuesday (3 days from now) and I want to make sure I'm not hosed.

If you can supply me with the password, I can attempt to do the force for now, if that doesn't work, and they reset his pcm, am I still screwed? Thanks for the help. below is the "key" I get off my tuner which is waiting for the password:

823D 2736 A596 BB01 18A0

If you can e-mail me the password today so I can attempt this, maybe he can take his car home today and we'll be all good (otherwise I'm down a car to lend to him).

Thanks.

For Sh*ts and giggles, I just popped the tuner in my car, and it said the same thing "tune was not sucessful, restore to default" or whatever. I didn't want to mess with it further so I unplugged.

When I bought my predator for my '01 Mustang V6 the package said it was for '99-04 V8's N/A and '99-03 V6's. I had the same model tuner you have, U7146, but the package strictly listed those years and trims. It might be different software for '99+. But if it wasn't compatable I'm suprised it even let you get past the main screen.

Come to think of it, no. It wouldn't say anything until it actually tried to back up the factory tune and upload the performance tune. Of course, like all computers, if you give it the wrong command it risks getting all funked up. I'm sure tech will be able to assist. It's very unlikely your ECM is fried, but if the computer is stuck mid-tune the odometer will read "-------------"

Worse case scenerio I would think, you might hafta get your car towed to a Ford Dealer and have them wipe and reflash the computer. Not sure if a Diablo can "un-stick" the ECM. Which is what it sounds like to me.

Yes, very much so if it's from another handheld. The chips I'm not certain. But if you've had your factory tune altered that could be an issue. I think the predator comes programed to tune from stock. If you try to stack a tune on a tune that could cause your ECM to freeze up and possibly foul the tuner too.

The question is, did you have a tune on it at the time the predator was applied?

If that is the case, you'll likely need a dealer to reflash your ECM back to factory tune.

I dont know.. Like i said i bought the car used and wat was done to it is a clue to me. i personally from the day i bought it to now. never plugged a tuner to it. But if we did a force restore i would think that would put it back to where we were befpre we touched it. Least thats wat i would think no

If you can hold off for tech support to address your issue I would go with their advice. For now I'd get a hold of a Ford service center in your area and see what you need to do to get a reflash, and talk to diablo support to see if they can straighten the tuner out. These are the safest actions you can perform until you get better info from someone more qualified. At least you'll have a backup plan.

What's up UmX,

I hope his warranty will cover that... I'm also hoping I can get my tuner back on my car. I have a dyno tune on Tuesday with a company that uses Diablosport only (not that I'd use any other chip, so far it's been great). My main concern for now is UmX's car, then onto mine.

Thanks for everyone's input for now.

Darkcrime,

Monday morning when they open you have to call them with the Predator hooked up to your buddies car. The tech will help you through the forced back up procedure. The password is a series of up and down and left and right arrows. Then is should be unmarried and able to remarry it to your car.

Is there any disclaimer info for the tuners.. like saying this may possibly eff up ur computer and have to take it to the dealership to be fixed

Bc as of right now i have had to pay $200 in tow fees and $100 to get it fixed bc a tuner was faulty and caused it, i called and talked to a tech and we tried to do a force on it and still failed. He mentioned something could be wrong with my computer? how common is that

Guys, call our tech line asap with the Predator hooked up to the car. Make sure there is no chip on the PCM as well. 561-908-0048

Yeah, I have to guess there was a chip on the PCM here as well...
