Do I need a professional tune?

Post by EddieH »

I purchased a U7198 Preditor tuner for my 2002 LS1 Corvette. The instructions makes it sound like I shouldn't put the performance tune in if I have added cold air induction and such. So after I have spent $370 on a tuner must I also spend that much more to have a CMR dealer tune my car.
If I had known this before I bought it I could have saved the money I spent on a tuner. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

nooo, you're not reading it correctly man...

a CAI plus the tune will work great together...

go ahead and install the tune... you'll have no problems at all...

after you've installed the tune and have driven for about 50 miles, get your fueling adjusted correctly, and you'll gain some even more throttle response, acceleration, and stronger/harder pulls...

Thanks, Do I need to be in a hurry to get the Air -Fuel ratio checked after the tune or could I drive it a few hundred miles without damaging my engine?

I guess you can tell this is all new to me. I installed the tune today. At some point while installing it I got a message saying that Diablo Sport strongly recomends a free flowing exhaust with the tune. What reason other than the fact that I would probably be getting the full potential out of the tune would there be for doing that. I don't really don't care to put a louder exhaust on for a few extra hp. It's running like a bat outta Hell now! I am getting to old for all that noise. I kinda like the sound of what I have and besides I don't want to attract any more attention than neccesary when I want to get into it! Thanks again for your help.

That is recommended just to get the Maximum performance out of the tune.

Sounds like a message that should only appear on diesel tools, may be a misprint...

On a similar note. I installed a performance tune, but am going to add headers and off road y-pipe and possibly a cold air induction kit. Can I just adjust the A/F ratio using the software or should I have a completly new tune loaded?

if you are adding long tube headers, you will need to get a custom tune created for you in order to disable the rear O2 codes...

other than that, you can adjust your injector slope yourself, using the predator, to get your average LTFT's back in the correct 0 to -2 range.

OK, I may have lucked out on that one. There are two slp tunes in the programmer. One is for stock and there is another one that when I choose it it says O2 disable. Hopefully I can just install that tune and then get my average LTFT's in order. I'll have to check into that one with SLP. Thanks for the info. Doesn't seem like anybody can stump you with these things lol

aaah, ok, didn't know you had an SLP predator, you didn't say...

yeah, that's their header tune, it will already have the O2 codes disabled for ya... so you can just install that tune and re-check your LTFT's to get them dialed back in.

stump me?? HAHAHAHA!! many have tried... but to no avail.. HAHAHAA... j/k ;)

So after starting threads, etc. I find .... "if you are adding long tube headers, you will need to get a custom tune created for you in order to disable the rear O2 codes... "

The main reason I bought the Predator was to turn off the rear sensors! ... and adjust a/f

So custom rear sensors off tunes can be emailed to me so I don't need to drive 1,000mi?

Monte, on another thread you stated that the rear sensors needed to be plugged into the wire harness but it didn't matter if they were installed in pipe or not.

Here you said to turn off the rear 02 sensor program. Now I'm confused again. I gutted the cats on my 08 Hemi and am installing Dual exhaust and better manifolds/headers.

correct... you can email a copy of your tunes to someone that has Diablo's CMR tuning software, and they can create you a custom tune that has the codes disabled.

not sure what vehicle you have, but I know on GM's, the new version predators on revision 9rxx do not have the capability to disable any emissions items anymore, like the O2 sensor codes, due to EPA regulations. so the only way to get them disabled is to get a custom tune created that has them disabled in the tune file already.

to "turn off the rear O2 sensors" - you just disable the rear O2 trouble codes - that's what is meant by that. but again, you need a custom tune to get those disabled.

and yes, the O2 sensors themselves still have to be plugged into the wiring harness/clip - cuz a signal is still sent to/from them from the PCM... so you still have to have them wired up... but you don't have to put them in the exhaust pipe, since you're not going to be using them anyway. you can tie them up somewhere out of the way, while still leaving them plugged in/connected to the wiring.
