Erratic and rough Idle and surge problem with Puck

Post by badvlvo »

I decided to change the setup in my truck. I had an Edge EZ that I liked but I didn't like having to remove the cover and change jumpers to change the tune. I was going to stack it with a Predator but I decided to go with a stack that was developed by the same company.

So today I installed a D7157 Power Puck today on my 2004 (10/03) Cummins. This is where the problem started.

The idle is very rough and erratic and it surges badly when driving.
This happens regardless of the position of the switch. It feels as if it is making the power that is claimed but even with the Puck switched off it runs rough. This was with the stock flash in the computer.

I tried a stack tune and it didn't make any difference. When I looked at the MAP sensor signal with the Predator it showed 13lbs boost.

My truck ran so poorly that I removed the Puck and installed the Performance tune with my Predator. It runs as smoothly (for a Cummins) as it did before.

I checked all of the connections and reinstalled the Puck to see if I didn't have somthing hooked up properly and it did the same thing again. I don't think it would be normal for the engine to run that rough at idle and to surge that hard.

What could be the cause of this problem? The installation is so easy that a retard with 2 left hands could do it in the dark.

On a happy note, the Predator works awesome.

Today I checked all of the connections again in the daylight. Nothing is wrong on the truck side. I changed the Predator to a stack tune and hooked the puck back up. It sounded horrible at idle. I didn't drive it like that as I don't want to damage the truck.

I need to know what is going on here.

Sounds like you might of gotten the wrong puck part number. Contact your dealer and see if he can replace it for you.

With a truck built 10/03 it is considered a 2004. Which part number should I have?

What is your 10th digit in the vin, it is possible it might be an 03 which requires the D7156.

Is yours a 2004 or a 2004.5?
Production date?
Thanks for the input.

JOHAN- Your input on this? I don't know what the difference in model years did to the electronics and I would like to know what you think before I have the vendor send me a different part number in exchange for mine.

I would recommend trying an 7158 as for some reason i have seen that the dodge electronics do not have a set point where they did a hardware change, more like a running change with no identifiers. Hence your issues with that part number.

10th of VIN

Post by badvlvo »

The 10th of my VIN is 4.

I will call the retailer and see what he can do for an exchange for me, but I think it will be a hassle. It came direct from a wholesaler with the retailer being the middleman never having possession of the parts.

I'm going with Johan's advice and your to try the 7158. I am calling the vendor 1st thing in the AM since I would like to have this resolved asap.
I need this power so I have an excuse to build a better trans for the truck.

My retailer is sending me a 7158. It should be here any time now and I will know for sure if that is what's going on here. I sure hope so, but at least the Predator is keeping me happy for now.
