Cyno - now thats funny bitching at ford because u modified a truck and recieved warrenty. You should grow some balls and take resposiblity for your actions. The bill should have been on you not ford.

I've been having the same problem since I installed my predator, and now it happens with the factory tune as well. The other forums, I've read, suggest that the aggressive timing advance the Predator offers, increases the cynlinder pressure to the point where the head bolts are slightly stretched, and just enough cynlinder pressure leaks into the cooling system.

I've always restored the factory tune before it goes back to the dealership.

Just recently I was preparing for a 3K mile vacation trip, when my PS, started pouring TONS of white smoke and coolant out the exhaust, so I immediately shut it down, restored the factory tune, and had it towed to the dealership.

They worked on it for 2.5 days, replaced the turbo, the EGR cooler, and flushed the cooling system, because there was a rusty color in the fluid. I'm now 1100 miles from home, and nervous, because I still have to replace about 1/2gal. of coolant back in for every 250 miles I drive, that is pushing out through the overflow reserviour.

So can anyone comment on this? Is this a vulnerability Ford already has and the power boost of the predator exacerbates the issues? I'm afraid to use my predator now, I'm afraid to keep my PSD, maybe I should dump that too. It is an 04 with 37K miles, it'd be a shame, but so is being stranded.

I'm running the "u7165_pcm_6_0-8r17.crom", but was running a much older version the 65HP Economy firmware version when the problem started, I think it might have been the "power_6_0-7r84_H512.crom".

I know the Banks, boasts more power than the Predator, but is a complete system, so I'm suspicious of the faulty head bolts.

Also, will DiabloSport ever release a tune that is specifically targeted at fuel economy?, I'd love to get more that 16.8 on the highway with no load. I have a friend that gets 23-25 on his 6.0L with the Banks on setting 5-6!!! He does have a manual transmission, but is otherwise the same truck.

First, sonicbluel do you like giving money away needlessly? I don't. If Ford will cover a repair, I'm prepared to let them. It has nothing to do with balls as you so elegantly suggest, it's purely a common sense financial matter. Besides, DiabloSport claimed that their product would not void my warranty when I bought it. I believe they still do.

So Since my last post, I've also had the truck back in the shop to replace all my fuel injectors and my heater core, since the EGR failure filled my cooling system with carbon and 2x in the shop getting it flushed.

So here is the list of repairs since I've had the truck:
EGR cooler
Turbo
Head Gaskets
Head bolts
Heater Core
ALL injectors
Cooling system flushed 4-5x
Other assorted standard maintenance and recall work

When the dealer replaced the fuel injectors, they asked if I had ever let the PSD run out of fuel, which I have NOT. I have no idea if they replaced them with an improved version.

So I have not reinstalled my Predator tunes, because I'm worried about dealing with more problems.

Mike, this is a '04 6.0L should I atribute all of these problems to Ford/International flaws, or could the tune be involved?
I live in a metro area and I love to run the 100HP tune, because the shift patterns work well with stop and go city traffic, is there a tune available with just the transmission pattern improvements, without the power boost? I'm afraid to add power, plus the engine is MUCH quieter without the power tunes.

Lastly, will there be an fuel economy only tune at some point with fuel nearly $5 gal. ?

Thanks

IOne thing that you have to take in consideration that the size of the rear end has to do with fuel economy to, the 3.73:1 rear end gets better fuel millage than the 4.10:1.

Of course, that stands to reason, I just wish that, with all the torque the PSDs have, Ford would install an additional over-drive gear to drop the RPMs even more when at speed, maybe it wouldn't get used during towing, but the rest of the time, take the free fuel mileage.

That said, I'd still like an economy only tune from DS, that would make them heroes at $132/barrel. I have a friend that was getting 22-25 MGP on his '05 6.0L with a manual tranny, so obviously it is possible. I think we both have the 3.73:1 rear end, I know I do.

Cole, are there plans for an economy only tune?

I was getting around 15 mpg on the 65hp, 18 on the towing, and 20 on the 100hp in the city. Just recently went on a little trip thru the mountains and got 20 mpg on the 65hp setting doing about 80 mph. I have an 2003 F250 2wd 6.0 with 21000 miles on it. Just recently installed a 4"turbo back exhaust and will update on any changes.

I have a friend with the Banks system, including exhaust, intake, and the 6 gun. He runs a 6.0L ('05) 4x4 supercab 8' box, manual transmission. He gets 22-25 on the highway.

I have almost the same truck mine is an '04, 6.5' box, autotransmission, but stock, without or without the Predator the best highway mileage I've EVER seen was 16.8 on a 1000+ mile trip.

I don't understand the HUGE difference there.

The #1 problem with these trucks is the EGR coolers have weak soldering jobs on them from the factory and blow out internally causing exhaust pressure in the coolant and vice versa. The other problem is that the heads have no room for error as far as deck warpage goes, and the first thing that goes when putting more boost through the system is the heads lift and warp. According to ford, you cannot resurface these heads. The solution is ARP studs. The head gaskets are well built, multilayered steel and almost NEVER the cause of failure. ARP studs will help keep the heads from lifting in the first place, hence no more problems...other than that damn pesky EGR cooler...EGR delete kit is the answer to that... ;)

Ok, I'm back with some interesting news. I mentioned that I had the injectors all replaced. The jury's not in yet, but I took about a 150 mile trip and checked my milage and to my surprise I was getting near 20mpg(from 16mph typical) with everything stock and the DSP set to the 65HP setting. Obviously, with such a short trip it's less meaningful statistically, and prone to fuel up level error, but just the same, interesting. I spoke with my brother who was a USMC deisel mechanic for 8years, working on mostly Internationals, and he suggested that when the injectors were replaced, a mechanic would have individually calibrated each cylinder's pressure and that probably they are much more uniform than factory, thereby improving the engine's efficiency extending to better mpgs.

I'll have to test it out again on a longer trip and provide an update, but the point is, if my brother is correct, it might be worth the time/cost of PSD owners to have a good mechanic calibrate their injectors. Just a thought, any other engine experts care to weigh in on this? ....???

I have run for a while since last post and found my fuel mileage gain, was either temporary or just a top off difference, because I'm still about the same, at 16.8 or 16.9 @73 MPH. Going 65 doesn't make any noticeable difference, not sure about 50-55, I can't drive that slow for several hundred miles to check it....

Since my last post however, I did blow another EGR cooler and valve while 800 miles from home, had to be towed, had the 65hp Econo-tun installed, no horsing around either. Damn you Ford Motor Company, need a government bailout?.... I can't imagine why. Try making quality product with a 10year/100,000 mile warranty and maybe we'll fall in love with over-priced American vehicles again. Between purchase price, interest, and repairs this truck costs as much as a decent small house. You'd think it would be a flagship product.
