Does the Predator Ignore the second O2 sensor?

Post by turbofan »

I did a quick search but didn't find the information i was looking for.

This weekend i'll be installing a 3" exhaust. i'm using the maxxfab catless downpipe.

i understand that with the stock computer, this will throw an error code because the computer will think the cat is bad. the stage 1 computer from Mopar eliminates this problem by ignoring the 2nd O2 sensor on the car.

i do NOT have stage 1, but i DO have the pred installed. will i have any problems with codes? if so, how will i go about solving this problem?

Just leave the rear o2 sensor plugged in but you can hang it under the car out of the way.. Then install the wdeband and thats it. Should not have a problem.

Well, he will have to turn off the rear O2 sensors with the predator right? :)

The predator tells the pcm to ignore the rear O2 sensor readings (or suppress the code). The pcm still monitors the circuit for open or short (heater control) so that's why you leave the sensor plugged in. I'm pretty sure if you go back to stock you would have to replace them after they were exposed to the elements for a while.

Question: (always been curious about this) If the heater circuit is still functioning just how hot does the tip or outside of the sensor get?
Do you need to make sure to strap them up to metal and with something like metal hose clamps? would they melt wires? start a grass fire if they were dragging on the ground?

You'll need a custom tune to disable the rear O2 sensor.

Can't hurt anything? Its an instant failure of an OBD2 inspection. Many of us need to pass that to keep our cars on the road.

In Ontario, the car does not need an inspection until it is 5 years old. I won't need one until 2011.

is it? then how can stage 1 do it?

i'm sorry, i didn't list which vehicle i'm talking about... PT cruiser GT.

ok, so because of the EPA, you can't do it as a standard tune?

but rage tek should be able to do it with a canned tune, correct?

It's not that EPA won't allow DS to do that, it's a product usability issue.

Your laws may differ by location but in general you could (and should) restore the original backup before an inspection.

Then there are the guys whose engines won't run on a stock tune. With their mods they're not likely to pass an inspection even if it did. That's a separate issue. Most of us can run a tune AND still pass inspection so it's easier for us not to have to revert to stock. But the main point is that most of us running a tune want the rear O2's functioning and would want to see a code if it was generated.

Isn't the Predator "for off road use only"? I thought it was always that way. I seriously doubt it's CARB approved (actually I think the tunes themselves would have to be CARB approved) so it would have to be "for off road use only" in California.

My engine won't run on a stock tune, but it will still pass inspection if needed (I have 2 years). I'm one of a very small number who has been able to run headers and yet still be able to keep my rear O2s functioning and ready. :)

i don't really see why the rear O2 is all that essential. (i'm talking about the 2.4 turbo cars, i don't know about you V8 folks) why would you really want it to work if you don't even have a cat in place?

Because you're legally required to have a cat. Doesn't matter which vehicle, or which state. Federal law says you can't screw with the emissions system. Every one of you who remove the cat are breaking the law, and if caught, the consequences are very high.
