Tuning for 07+ trucks w/6.2L
Tuning for 07+ trucks w/6.2L
I had the predator on my 2005 Silverado and loved it, i didnt even get the custom diablo tune and it still took almost a full 1-sec off my 1/4mile time with just the 87 octane tune.
I now have a 2008 GMC Sierra with the 6.2L engine and 6spd trans. I have two questions:
1) My truck comes from the factory with a 91+ octane requirement. Does the predator take this into account?
2) I am going to be putting 305/55/20 (basically 33") tires on soon. From my understanding the predator can not tune the transmission on these newer trucks but CAN correct the speedo for the larger tires. How will this affect the shift points since I believe the trans shifts from an iteration that takes both speed and RPM into play...
Thanks!

RE: Tuning for 07+ trucks w/6.2L
1. You would install the Diablo tune which is made for 91 or higher octane
2. It won't change your shift points, as you said the TCM isn't changed on the new vehicles. What will happen if you go to the bigger wheels and tires is a MPG drop and a loss of acceleration due to the heavier setup.

You will also have the option of running an 87 octane tune on this truck...

technically i can already run 87 octane, the manual just says that i would loose some performance and may experience pinging..
what's the difference/advantage to running the 91 octane diablo tune over the stock 91 octane tune?
and for question #2- i was talking more along the lines of when the truck will shift. since the diablo doesn't change the shift points will my truck hold 1st gear longer or for less time due to the offset in speed vs rpm.
if i was worried about gas mileage i wouldnt have got a 6.2L. and since i have the low 1st gear of the 6spd trans and 400+ hp, im not too worried about losing a little acceleration due to the 33s... bet i can still be in the low 15s

Hey mike, is there a projected time frame where the predator may have TCM support.... or will the Trinity be able to do it?
I'm putting my lift on today and ordering my 33s next week and trying to decide on what to do about programming.
Ideally, id like the predator and have you guys build me a tune through data logging.... but if TCM support isnt coming in the near future, it makes my decision harder since there are a few shops who can do custom dyno tuning for around the $500 mark and modify the TCM... but i've always like having the programmer

Only one thing to say about my "Diablew" Tune!
" Just Friggin Wicked"
Now with TCM support...

well, technically ya can't...sk1er18 wrote:technically i can already run 87 octane, the manual just says that i would loose some performance and may experience pinging..
if you're using the diablo tune / performance tune, those tunes by diablo are made specifically for 91 octane gas or higher only... cuz they have increased/more advanced timing - so you HAVE to use 91 octane gas or higher...
but the predators for the trucks also have a separate 87 octane tune done by diablo that you would have to use if you were using only 87 octane gas... that's what he was talking about... that there is an 87 octane tune available on the predator for your truck...

Thanks Mike. But are we talking about weeks, or months?mikel wrote:It is coming...we are at work on this as we speak....
No, technically i can... because technically i can drive down to the station right now and put 87 octane in according to my owners manual. So yes, technically i can run 87 octane in my truck right now.06MonteSS wrote:well, technically ya can't...sk1er18 wrote:technically i can already run 87 octane, the manual just says that i would loose some performance and may experience pinging..
But i guess Mike was suggesting that i would be able to run 87 octane without a performance decrease? I dont know, doesnt matter... 91+ for this truck
hahahah
what I was saying was, if you are using the diablo/performance tune, you need to run 91 octane gas... if you use the 87 octane tune that is on the predator, then you can use 87 octane gas...
if you try to run 87 octane gas when you're using the diablo/performance tune, you'll get a ton of knock/ping and knock retard due to the more advanced timing in that tune... that's why I said "technically ya can't"... if you use 87 gas with the 91+ tune, you could cause engine damage due to all the knock...

^^^ Yea man i hear what you're saying. I meant that i can run 87 octane on my stock tuned truck if i wanted to. I know you cant run 87 on a truck that diablo tuned for 91+.
Oh and Mike, when/if you get around to this thread again... i was thinking today: Since you guys say you are working on the TCM support, can you at least tell us how it will become available? For instance can i buy the predator now to recalibrate my speedo and bump up the performance... and then download an update in the future for TCM support- or is it going to be a new P/N that we're going to have to buy??

So I have yet to talk to anyone with a Diablo tuned 6.2L (L92 truck) engine... I was very happy with the predator on my 05 5.3L but am still torn. Does anyone have some data for how the L92 engines take to the Diablo tune? Also for a relatively stock truck (intake & cat-back exhaust), is dialing the LTFT's enough and thus a custom tne really wouldn't help much more than that?
And Mike, do you think that when/if TCM support is available is it likely to be an update that we can download the the U7194?
