Setting up data log groups.

Post by electricmarquis »

Is there a way to predefine your PID's in groups. That way you can select your parameters ahead of time without having to go through the tool selections each time?

Since you are asking this in the DataViewer section, I assume you are talking about setting up dashboards within the DataViewer, and not on the Predator itself?

If so, then the answer is YES. You can create and save dashboards within the DataViewer for re-use. The far right tool bar on the DataViewer is for dashboard management. After setting up a dashboard just the way you want it, select <new dashboard> in the drop down and click the "Save the dashboard" button next to it.

Well no.

I was talking about making your log preferences first without hooking up the tool. That way when you get into your truck/car you can just start the logging instead of spending 5 mins or so to select the items you want to data log.

I agree - we want to plug the Predator into my PC and transfer the list of parameters I want to watch /record so that I don't have to sit like a prat in the car for five minutes shuffling through the menu lists.

yeah, that's what johnc just told ya... for the first time doing it, hook up the predator and the laptop/dataviewer...

select the PID's you want and setup the dashboard... save it like he said..

then next time, you can get in, hook up the predator/laptop/dataviewer, then load that pre-saved dashboard, and it will have all of the PID's selected that you saved with that dashboard...

Sorry about that, I'm like a computer - you have to punch information into me.
My Dad's coming round tonight - he's got a laptop - so so I hope we'll be able to load up all the PIDs over from the car to a new dashboard on the laptop via the Predator and then copy it from his laptop onto my desktop PC.
I still don't know how to get the desktop PC to load a set of preferred PID choices back into the Predator though to set it up ready for the next logging trip because I can't find a menu commend in DataViewer 3.1.9.5 for loading selections to the Predator.
I don't have a laptop so I can't normally run a computer live on the car. I expect to use the Predator to collect data and then bring it into the house after a run and download it into DataViewer. That's why I want to pre-select the PIDs for the Predator to log.

I am confused with what you are trying to accomplish with the laptop. Just save logs on the Predator and then download them to your PC for viewing on the DataViewer. Once they are opened in the DataViewer, you can right-click on the PIDs in the parameter list and choose "Select Children" if you just want to see them all together in a chart.

OR you can create a dashboard with a special layout of gauges and charts, but you only need one saved log to do that. Open the log, arrange everything the way you want, then click the "Save the dashboard" button at right with "<new dashboard>" in the box next to it. Then, every time you download a log from the Predator, you can choose that dashboard to arrange the gauges and charts. Once you save the log, that layout gets saved with it, so you will only have to do that once per log.

What we're wanting to do is set up the Predator for logging certain PIDs before we put it in the vehicle.
And we want to choose a different set of PIDs to be recorded each day.
I understand from your replies that we should record all the PIDs every trip and then use the Dashboards to filter out the ones we want to see.
Will that not fill the Predator too quickly?

Yeah, you want to record just the specific PIDs that you are looking at, because the data sampling rate goes down when you select more PIDs.

To accomplish what you are asking, you are going to need to live stream all the time with the laptop. That way you can choose a dashboard.

But what you really need is something like the Trinity where you can save multiple dashboards on the device itself.

Thanks. I think the answer to Mr electricmarquis is in your last reply - basically the Predator can't do it but the Trinity can, and a laptop connected for live streaming can also do it.
My Dad came round with his laptop last night and we did live streaming but I forgot to try different dashboards.

Thanks for your patience JohnC and thanks for the original question electricmarquis.
